The Dead of Winter

Saturday, January 08, 2011

In the dead of winter a break from the cold and snow occurs. The sky brightens, the sun shines all day and the temperature rises. This gentle reprieve from the cold inspires me to write poetry. Poetry is an outlet, a way to release inner feelings. I don't believe there is a wrong way to pen posey words. I am aware of common forms and styles used in verse, but there are so many different ways to show expression that it would be nearly impossible to learn them all. Poetry clothes itself in a mini skirt as in a Haiku or it wears a long robe as in Psalms 119; the in-betweens-- the shirts, the pants and the dresses--fill closets. Write a poem for you and if it seems fit share it.

Cocooned in a book or enclosed in a age-yellowed photo album resides a forgotten poem. One penned long ago or one received from a child's youthful days. One of my favorites came from my daughter when she was in the first grade. The uneven scroll of bright green crayon stood out on the pink construction paper heart. It is forever captured under fading yellow scrapbook film and forever alive in my heart.

Roses are red
Violets are blue
I Love you and
I wish I didn't have to go to skool.

Today I wrote this poem reflecting on weather and life.

Daytime Closes

The dazzling sun breaks through the bleak sky to give a reprieve from the cold winter day.
Parents and children molt winter's cocoon from their bodies.
Coats, hats, gloves and boots accumulate in the corner waiting the next storm.
Warm temperatures free the body.
Along the lane, people wash cars, take down outdoor Christmas decorations,
barbeque or go  for a stroll.

Daytime closes; darkness prepares for the chill of a new day.
So it is in winter, so it is in life.

In the middle of the storms of life, the dazzling sun breaks through to give a reprieve.
The mind's cocoon flies open and a fresh attitude appears.
Psyche's amour temporally resides in the corner waiting the next storm.
Along the life's lane, activity bustles. Creativity comes to life, exploring, prodding,
Contemplating or planning the future.

Daytime closes; darkness prepares for the chill of a new day.

I urge you to write and share a poem with us. Short on time, try your hand
at a winter Haiku. It's fun and challenging.
