Louise Alexandra Erskine: How Vulnerability Builds A Brand

Wednesday, May 08, 2024
Screw Prince Charming by Louise Alexandra Erskine

By Rosie MacLeod

Imagine if you could explore and confront your most traumatic experiences in a way that would help not only you but also your readers to heal?

This is precisely what Louise Alexandra Erskine has turned her hand to. Poetry helped her “unintentionally” to face—and progress beyond—the “compound trauma of childhood trauma, failed marriage [and] an abusive marriage.” One of her micropoems went viral, accumulating 50,000 repins on Pinterest. Fans have even been tattooed with its words:

And
from the
Chaos
of Her soul
there
flowed
Beauty

This year, she released her second poetry collection, Screw Prince Charming!, also home to many micropoems. Why micropoems? “The format is a tool that’s more accessible,” Louise muses, “it’s a really good way to pick apart your own hopes, dreams, disappointments, trauma and memories and make them digestible.”

Vulnerability, micropoems, and building your brand gradually—Louise Alexandra Erskine shares how to build your “personal brand of books” and resonate with readers in self-care poetry.

***

WOW: Thanks for joining us today. Your new collection, Screw Prince Charming! is very readable. Talk to me about your work, and how you got started.

Louise: It has all just grown up with me. It’s just me exploring what it is to be a woman, to be me, to have trauma, to heal. All these little parts of me, entwined. We—me and poetry—are growing up together, and we are not there yet. That’s why I haven’t written my experiences as a memoir yet. It’s a process that it is still working itself out publicly—not just healing, being brave enough to dream publicly. I think that’s the hardest part, sometimes.

WOW: So you and poetry are still growing, and in an interview, you said it had evolved into something larger. What is that something?

Louise: I never really set out to be a brand, but it’s evolving that way. I almost feel like it’s more of a movement than anything, this movement of people who have grown in that constant battle between feeling broken and searching for wholeness and meaning in all of the trauma. We are not lightness, and we aren’t darkness. Me and people like me are the light between the stars.

You are worth celebrating - Louse Alexandra Erskine

WOW: For readers searching that wholeness, your poetry books feature spaces for writing exercises geared towards self-care. What made you want to build this service-orientated brand around your books?

Louise: When I was 26, journaling was huge. I was divorcing. To have kept a diary or a journal would have been incredibly unsafe for me. A poem, on the other hand, if somebody found it, could just be a poem. So poetry enabled me to pin down on paper and gain perspective. I would feel less weighed down by ‘the things’ if I could just look at them in front of me, rather than feeling trapped beneath them. I just felt, if that works for me, there will be others whom journaling is overwhelming or unsafe.

WOW: Gosh, that’s a danger I’d never even thought could exist. What came first for you—the poetry or the therapy? Were you writing poetry when you found it to be a great healer, or recovering when you discovered poetry really helped?

Louise: I was healing and writing poetry, but I didn’t realize I was doing the two things simultaneously; it was just a natural process for me.

WOW: And was the self-care angle also a natural one to pursue? Did you see the therapeutic benefits of writing, and just need to get the word out there? Or was it something else?

Louise: It was just something I enjoyed. I realized then I would feel lighter because of it. It helped me to feel less alone. When I put my poems out there and they generate reaction; I know I am reducing peoples’ loneliness. And if my work could do that, that was everything to me. It was all about the connection. I did not want anyone else to feel as painfully isolated as I had.

Someone that loves you doesn't diminish you in an effort to make their own light brighter - Louise Alexandra Erskine

WOW: As well as relieving loneliness, you inspire other people to write. There are spaces for writing exercises in your books and journals. Why do you inspire other people to write?

Louise: We rise by lifting others. If you push a rock up a hill, you’re still going to summit! I want to be the best teacher or mentor. To be a leader, you must want to take people where you’ve been and equip them to go further. That is the joy of leadership.

WOW: And by leading them into creativity, your readers become writers. The receiver of the creativity becomes a creator. Are you deliberately pushing boundaries and asking, “What even is poetry?” and “What even is a poet?”

Louise: Yes, I absolutely am. I don’t just write poetry, I am poetry. There’s a Bible verse that talks about how we are God’s masterpiece—“masterpiece” is the Greek word for “poem,” pōema (also spelt “pōlema”), from where we get “poem”: you are a poem that God wrote. That’s me. I am literally walking poetry. No, you don’t have to write things in nifty little squares to be a poet. You literally are poetry. To be a poet is about pushing boundaries. If you can do it in poetry, you can push them elsewhere. You can challenge societal norms to improve the world. I know that sounds incredibly idealistic, but I am and I’m not sorry!

WOW: In pushing boundaries, you seem to define poetry as “An ongoing conversation—an energy—shared with my readers.” All your readers and followers are writing a chapter in your work. Am I right?

Louise: Yes. I love that so much. It is not about me or my writing or my personal glory, it is about creating a movement of people that can heal and evolve and challenge enough to change the world. That is my aim.

"We all have a distinctive backstory. It's a case of being able to be vulnerable enough to share it."

WOW: What tips do you have for building that movement and a brand around books? Is it a distinctive backstory? A landmark quote? Some other Unique Selling Point?

Louise: I wish I knew! I am figuring this out as I go. I think it’s all of the above. We all have a distinctive backstory. It's a case of being able to be vulnerable enough to share it. You are your brand, and you must find your people. A distinctive backstory could be absolutely anything. Whatever your story, your people will be out there, people who identify with you and share part of your story. You need to be brave enough to be vulnerable with them, and honest enough to show your genuine self. That is scary, especially at the start. A wide audience would be lovely, but my focus is on finding the right audience: meeting the readers my heart is for and then bringing them alongside me in the best possible way. A wide audience will help you to find more of the right audience. I keep trusting that focusing on the right audience will cause the rest to fall into place. It’s a balance. Maybe that is the unique selling point—nobody else can tell my story.

WOW: Do you find that very contemporary language helps to tell that unique story? I’ve noticed that the language in your poems is very colloquial.

Louise: It depends on the audience you’re trying to attract. If you want to connect with academics and intellectuals, then use all of the beautiful poetic language. But if you’re looking to connect with people who are broken and searching for a way to heal, then you need to speak to them and meet them where they are. I am not afraid to drop an F-bomb in a poem because that will connect with my target audience (trauma survivors). It’s mostly about knowing whom you want to connect with so you can know which language is best for you to use.

WOW: So that’s the advice for speaking to a readership—what about for writing in a positive and therapeutic way? Any advice on that?

Louise: Even when it’s something that hurts, you can still make it beautiful with poetry. I wrote a poem about a miscarriage I had. There was nothing in it to say it was about a miscarriage. It said, “And just like that you were gone, and I’m left here without you. Like a sky stripped of all its stars.” It helped me to put metaphor to something. It makes it simultaneously bigger and smaller. I feel like it’s okay now. I will never be a woman who hasn’t miscarried multiple times, but I can now hold that information without it breaking me because I processed it, wrote it in this way, and because I’ve made it into something that’s beautiful. I shared it and people have connected with the sense of loss and that is an incredibly powerful thing.

Not your puppet, not your strings - Louise Alexandra Erskine

WOW: You’ve also processed painful domestic abuse in poetry, as well as how you are overcoming it. Do you have any advice for writing about really traumatic issues?

Louise: Think about a moment that hurt. You can just take a small segment from it, without naming the whole, specific trauma. Just capture the essence of it. Write maybe ten micropoems about the same/similar moments. You will slowly build a picture of something that happened as well as how you are processing and healing from it. Don’t ever share it while it’s still raw. You need to write it, put it away and come back to it.

Don’t share it until you’ve finished processing it. The absolute last thing you want to do is write something traumatizing for you and attract invasive and overwhelming comments. The first time you share it, tell it to your best friend. Tell them things you haven’t been brave enough to say out loud. And you don’t have to give a huge life story. Sharing a little bit of trauma at a time is the most effective way to heal.

WOW: When you are confronting trauma through those micropoems, when you’re building up a picture of what you’ve experienced, how do you keep writing positively?

Louise: Balance. Try to share a combination of my goal—meeting my people in their pain and isolation. I do this by letting my readers know I have felt what they feel. It would be incredibly heavy to only discuss those things. So I will also write poems that discuss the beautiful moments.

Much of the time, writers and speakers tend to sell themselves to an algorithm that works beautifully in terms of initial growth but that is detrimental long term. So, if I share something painful, complaining, and it does well, then the tendency is to say, “the algorithm likes this, so I’ll just keep sharing that content.” You then tunnel vision your way to only having this very one-sided, narrow perspective on content that you are sharing. And you must keep the bigger picture in mind. It is better to grow slowly. And then have a body of work that readers can look back through. Keep the wider picture, don’t niche too far as tempting as it can be.

"If I share something painful, complaining, and it does well, then the tendency is to say, 'the algorithm likes this, so I’ll just keep sharing that content.' You then tunnel vision your way to only having this very one-sided, narrow perspective on content that you are sharing. And you must keep the bigger picture in mind."

WOW: Are there any topics you would avoid, to keep that balance and keep writing in a positive way? Or is nothing off limits?

Louise: I think it very much depends on the circumstances. In a domestic abuse interview or blog post, I might discuss a specific incident of sexual trauma. I won’t put those things into poems. If I do an interview about domestic abuse, the people watching it have consented to that content. I don’t feel like anything is off-limits for me, but I will be the one to choose how and when and where those things are shared.

WOW: And yet, you’ve managed to do all this writing and interviews and raising awareness without using your name! Your entire brand is known as “Beautifully Defected.” Why did you take this as your “nom de plume”?

Louise: One of the many ways this idea of being “beautifully defected” came about was when I was in what might be called a “situationship” with a guy. He went to a rave and sent me a picture of him with a sticker reading “we are defected” stuck to his forehead. I didn’t know if it was thoughtless or if it was a comment on our relationship. Either way, yes, we are defected as a couple and as individuals—but I’ll be damned if I’ll be ashamed of that. I am defected, but it makes me beautiful. I can be more beautiful for having been broken. I was fashioned into something beautiful. Nobody gets to tell me that my brokenness is ugly.

WOW: Well put, and poetic as always, Louise! Thank you for chatting with me today.

Interview with Julie Hester Runner Up in the 2022 Q1 Creative Non-Fiction Essay Contest with "Lucy's Lips"

Saturday, March 05, 2022

Congratulations to Julie Hester and Lucy's Lips and all the winners of our 2022 Quarter 1 Creative Non-Fiction Essay Contest!

Julie's Bio:
Julie Hester has served progressive faith communities as a pastor in the Presbyterian Church USA, and is a freelance writer specializing in curriculum and faith formation. She leads workshops on writing through grief, and writing as a spiritual practice, and helps others discover the power of writing in company with a supportive group. Scattered in the pages of her composition books and computer files are the beginnings of a memoir, a couple of children’s books, and a novel draft that makes her laugh. Julie lives in North Carolina with a patient spouse, an anxious dog, and an open door for her young adult children to come home. Find out more about her work and subscribe to her weekly writing prompts at www.juliehester.com. This is her first contest submission.

If you haven't done so already, check out Julie's talent in writing with the touching story Lucy's Lips and then return here for a chat with this talented author.

WOW: Thank you Julie for sharing your essay. It's so inspiring to hear from our contestants - I always learn something! I'm sure you've got some great tips and tricks to share, so let's get to it!

Where do you write? What does your space look like?

Julie:  I write all over the house. I have a favorite chair by a window in two different rooms, and I’ve gotten good at switching between my composition notebooks and my computer on my lap. I also have a home office upstairs, but my dopey senior dog Twyla prefers that I write downstairs with her.

WOW: I love that you've got a companion writing with you - Twyla sounds like a lovely companion! What’s next for you? What are your writing goals for 2022 and beyond?

Julie: In 2022 my goal is to choose between several ideas for a non-fiction book project, and make some progress on it—either one of two memoir ideas, or a writing guide and devotional for people who are grieving. Or work on the children’s book idea I have. Or pick up my NaNoWriMo fiction book again. Or take a poetry class. Like the space where I write—all over the house—I write all over different genres too. I’d like to actually finish something this year, as well as enjoy the process of writing whatever is most compelling to me in the moment.

WOW: Sounds like you'll be very busy - all those options and ideas; you certasinly won't be bored!

What role has journaling and/or writer's groups played in your life?

Julie:  I’ve been a haphazard journaler since my first yellow diary with the lock and key I had in second grade. Half-filled notebooks are my favorite item to collect. I discovered the power of writing in company with others when I reluctantly walked into a one-day writing workshop for bereaved mothers. I was five years past the death of one of my twin sons, and knew I needed some way to process my grief. The group of grieving mothers that met one another that day has now been writing together for nineteen years. We usually meet twice a year for a weekend, but we’ve also traveled to a French chateau, the desert Southwest, and Willa Cather’s Nebraska prairie. We’ve written a book, host a blog, and share what we’ve learned to help others heal. Our group texts have given us all life during the pandemic. My experience with that group of writers led me to train as a facilitator with Amherst Writers & Artists, and I lead online and in-person writing groups where I get to share the power of reflective writing with others.

WOW: That certainly speaks strongly about the power of journaling and healing. Thank you for sharing in oh so many ways to help others.

This was your first contest submission - tell us what prompted you to submit? What would you like to tell other authors concerning contests and submitting their work?

Julie: Just do it! It’s terrifying and thrilling at the same time. I’ve been thinking about “someday” for a long time. Someday I’ll polish that piece. Someday I’ll have something good enough. Someday I’ll find the right journal or website. What if today is someday?

WOW: That right there is worth it's weight in gold - I hope others really follow you're great example!

How did you get started with your weekly writing prompts? What drives you in this arena?

Julie:  I write better when I have a prompt to get started. My weekly writing prompts are as much for me as for those on my mailing list. They can be a starting point for morning pages, a prose essay, a poem, a journal entry, or an idea that writers just tumble around for a while in our heads until something unexpected comes out later. Choosing prompts to share has become a kind of spiritual practice for me. I’ve learned I need to slow down enough to notice what’s happening around me, and reframe it as inspiration for writing. Like the moment I wrote about in my piece Lucy’s Lips—it could have been gone and forgotten. Instead, the prompt to “write about something seen in a mirror” led to a memory I gratefully captured on paper.

WOW: This has been so inspiring - thank you ever so much Julie for sharing your essay, and your time with us today! We look forward to more from you in 2022 and beyond!

Friday Speak Out!: How Journaling Saved My Writing

Friday, June 11, 2021
by Maruable (Marusa Zemva)

In recent years I've often dreamed of flying. These kind of dreams have always been my favorite. If I could be any animal, I would choose to be a bird. So I can fly wherever I want to, whenever I want to. From a bird’s eye perspective, everything looks so clear, so small, almost meaningless.

Well, the dreams where we can fly are supposed to tell us that we need to change something.
And when we finally decide we will do something different, our insecurities come to the fore. When I decided I would pursue my writing career I was overwhelmed by a strong doubt. I doubted my ability to describe and summarize my views. I doubted my ability to correctly express myself. I've had this big fear of the language barrier, and I was convinced that I was simply not capable of writing content worth reading and sending out as to actually get someone to read it.

I struggled for months to write something and lost myself in trying this and that. I was so afraid of not writing well and being rejected that I just didn't do anything. I gave up before I even started. I stopped trying.

Looking back, I think I didn't know shit about myself and my desire to write was not strong enough. A year later, I was alone one day, drinking wine and thinking about writing, and suddenly I felt like I had a pivotal moment where I realized I was made to write. It hit me literally from nowhere, and it was like a 'light bulb' moment of sorts.

Later, I somehow managed to suppress all my feelings and hopes, and I accepted that I just wasn’t capable of writing. Which didn’t mean that someday I wouldn’t be, but at that moment it was more important to know I was not.

One day I took a piece of paper and began to write. My monologue. My journal. My thoughts. I wrote something small every day. Some days I wrote just a few words and some days I wrote pages. This helped me overcome my own limiting beliefs. Until it all became so real and unbelievably clear, and I thought, it would be sad not to share this mess with anyone. It would be sad to not share my soul story with some other souls out there. Souls, who might be struggling, souls who might be feeling as lost and defeated as I was back then. And just like that I decided I would collect all this written mess into one book.

From that day on, I called myself a writer. And now it is up to me to upgrade from writer to author. I know I have a long way to go, but now my belief is stronger than my doubts, and I believe that change can happen. That change is a real possibility. And, truth be told, I am the one who will make it happen.

While journaling down my thoughts and feelings, I also became more observant of the world around me. It really brought so much clarity into my life, and I am beyond grateful for that 'light bulb' moment I had.

For once in my life, I freed myself of all my thoughts. Through that, I realized my meaning. And after that, I never dreamed of flying again.

Intimate Writing Prompt

Tuesday, March 09, 2021
Picture of My Office (my intimate space)

I just finished an interview that you may have read - but it brought to light a fun idea.

Whether you are a writer or a reader, take a moment to ask yourself this question:

Is there some space, person, or something in my life I know intimately ?

Of course there is - right? It might be your shower - you put the shampoo in the exact same place every single time. You could find your razor in the dark with your eyes closed. The soap always smells the same. Even with soap in your eyes, you could find the towel bar, right? Maybe it's your spouse - the patch of hair on his chest, the gentle sound of her breathing just moments before the alarm sounds each morning. Or maybe it's your writing space or your kitchen table.

You get the point. Let's go onto the next question:

Using ALL of your senses, think of how you would describe

this intimate object, space, or person to someone else  ?

There you go - that's your writing prompt for today. If you aren't a writer, maybe you could make a list of things you might say or words you would use to describe this intimate object, space, or person.

If you're asking yourself - why should I do this? What's the benefit? I was kind of hoping you'd do the exercise and then tell me if it brought you some benefits, but...

If you must know - this is a writing prompt that is also an exercise in positivity and joy. When you finish looking at this object, space, or person from a new perspective (from the perspective of  stranger) you will have a new appreciation for something you usually take for granted. This is a fun activity to do from time to time and it's a great way to get those creative juices flowing.

As you know, I love comments - so even if you chose not to do this exercise, leave a note as to why. If you did this exercise, what was your take away? Please leave your thoughts as they are greatly appreciated and help me grow in my own writing!

GO!

Thanks in advance for the comments! You're Fabulous!!!

Hugs,
~Crystal

---- Interview by Nicole Pyles

WOW: I am so excited to have you back to talk about Journaling Power. Tell me a little bit about this book and why it's so poignant for right now.

Mari: Journaling Power is a self-help memoir. It shares the experiences I’ve had so far with this marvelous mindset medicine and provides prompts and exercises for people so they can start their very own life-changing Journaling For The Health Of It® Practice. The Pandemic, like with me and my MS diagnosis, offers us the opportunity to come home to ourselves and create the happy, healthy life that we want to live. Journaling is our inner world/universe of infinite possibilities 24/7/365 Tour Guide that shows us how to live our life our way!

WOW: You are so right, the pandemic definitely called us to take a journey inwards. How did journaling change your life?

Mari: Oh, in so many ways! Here is my Journaling For The Health Of It® video which talks about my top 3 benefits:

WOW: That is so amazing! What is the difference between life for you when you first wrote this book and how it looks now?

Mari: I am excited to report that I now live the life of the True Mari L. McCarthy. When I wrote Journaling Power I was in the early stages of healing the issues in my tissues. Now that I am embodied in my True Self, I acknowledge that Self-Love is where the action is. My Journaling takes me on a daily treasure hunt! Health-wise, I’ve been off BigPharma drugs for 17 years, OTC drugs for 12, on a Paleo diet for 2, sleep straight through every night 7-8 hours (Yay! No bathroom breaks needed!) And talk about creativity!

WOW: I can't even begin to tell you how inspiring that is. What advice do you have for people who have never journaled before?

Mari: Visit CreateWriteNow.com to discover what Journaling For The Health Of It@ has for them wherever they are on their life journey. We have a Life Matters Blog, Mari’s Journaling Power Blog, a Journaling Power Prompts Blog with about 385+ eclectic Journaling Prompts and a Store that has 20+ Inner Journey Workbooks including the newest Start Journaling For The Health Of It® Write Now which is a good starting point. My suggestion is to then get a notebook and a pen and put a question at the top of the page and then write, write, and write until you feel (my favorite 4 letter “F” word) like stopping. It’s also very important for everyone to know that there is only one right way to Journal: Your Way!

WOW: That's the best way of all! What are you working on now?

Mari: I’m writing the 3rd book in the Journaling Power Trilogy, Mindset Medicine: A Self-Love Journaling Power Book and creating a Mindset Medicine Journaling Power Prompts Card Deck. They’ll be published December 7, my 70th birthday week. I’m also celebrating 23 years as a Journaling Power Journaler and anyone who’d like to celebrate with me can come to my CreateWriteNow.com Store and get 23% off everything when they enter Mari23 at checkout. My YouTube Channel https://www.youtube.com/c/CreateWriteNow is up and running and subscribers get a weekly lesson from our best-selling 27 Weeks to Health and Happiness Course Attachments area Preview YouTube video Hi, I'm Mari. Welcome to Create Write Now.

WOW: You are a true inspiration! I love how much you have going on. I can't wait to see what's next for you. Thank you so much!

Must Have: Start Writing Again with 14 Days of Journal Magic for Writers (And Giveaway)

Saturday, August 15, 2020

Review by Nicole Pyles

Remember when you first fell in love with writing? Maybe you were a little kid and wrote short stories about your dolls and stuffed animals. Maybe you read a book that touched your heart so much you thought to yourself, I want to do that for another reader, too. Maybe it was specific words themselves that pulled you close.

Over this past year, I have had quite a few stops and starts when it comes to my writing. At times, I forgot about it completely. Other times, I used it as an escape. Several months ago, I had the chance to read Mari L. McCarthy's 14 Days of Journal Magic for Writers and it helped me get back in touch with my love of writing.

In this book, Mari takes you on a journey through writing, including giving you moments of reflecting on your goals and your existing work. What I love about this is that there is no pressure at all in the exercises. It made me think about what I loved the most about writing. This book helped me figure out what my goals with writing and what has gotten me stuck lately. It also helped me focus on the stories themselves I'm working on, which I really appreciated.

One of my favorite exercises asks you questions that you must answer honestly.

A few of them include:

- When did you first consider yourself a writer?

- What about writing most appealed to you in the beginning? What made you want to continue?

- What do you enjoy most about writing now? What do you find most rewarding?

Answering these questions - and others included in the book - helped me realize why I am a writer and why I love telling stories.

I think this book is incredibly important for all of us right now, especially if you are feeling too stressed to write. Mari's book helped me quiet my spirit and reflect on where I'm at now and where I'd like to be.

Although this book can be worked through in a linear fashion, there were many times I jumped ahead a bit. I also let a few days go by between exercises, too. And this is one of those books that I plan on reading more than once. Like many of the books on writing that I have come to treasure, I know I will get something new out of it every time.

If you are in a spot in your life where writing seems far away, I encourage you to purchase Mari L. McCarthy's 14 Days of Journal Magic for Writers. It will help you get back on track and process the stress that keeps coming at us this year.

Start Where You Are

Saturday, August 01, 2020
How many times have you thought to yourself, "I should have started writing about this when it started; why didn't I?"

Maybe it's just me - but I haven't been as diligent with my writing as I should be. I haven't been as diligent about anything as I should be. I'm a hot mess of missed articles, a messy desk, and a scattered brain. This global pandemic has me treading water on what feels like a sinking ship and it's not even a nice old fashioned type Titanic ship with fancy glasses - it's more like Gilligan's Island and I just want someone to rescue us and here I am wearing red high heels on the beach. As a side note to my side note, here's what not to say when someone uses the sinking ship analogy: "everyone is in the same boat". My husband mentioned that the other day and I reminded him if we are ALL in the same boat, there won't be enough life jackets so I was in NO way comforted by his well meaning sentiment.

See? Like that...off I go...

squirrel

Let's get back on track.

This pandemic began back in March here in Wisconsin. I've jotted down a few journal entries here and there, made a few blog posts, posted a couple pictures and notes on my social media, and I keep thinking I should be writing a detailed account of our experience. It would be therapeutic to me and priceless to my children and future generations someday.

But...

But...

I don't remember all the details from the beginning. I can't start in the middle.

Or can I?

The truth is, I can start right where I am. Mark Twain said:

"The Secret to Getting Ahead is Getting Started."

It's not often a book starts with birth and ends with death. Does any story ever really start from the beginning? Is birth the beginning or is conception? Chicken? Egg? Truth is, it doesn't matter.

I could easily summarize the first few months and move forward with my writing. I wouldn't even need to write or journal every day, a simple photograph here or there will help tie the story together or help with a future memory. I could use my introduction as a way to pull things together "from the beginning". Even if I get distracted, something is better than nothing. Mari McCarthy of Create Write Now  talks about journaling for your health and well-being and right now, more than ever, there are many of us feeling very unusual (to say the least). Even if you have not been diligent with your writing or journaling, start right where you are and use your time and talents to help you feel more in control during these uncertain times.

Setting small attainable goals has always been very helpful for me - my goal is starting today (August 1st) I am going to spend time with my journal. I'm starting right where I am and I am going to keep track of life and my thoughts for the month of August. Once we get to the end of August I can reassess that goal and either adjust it or make a new one, but I'm starting.

How about you?

Have you been writing? Why or why not?
What is your long term goal with your writing or journaling?
Has writing/journaling been therapeutic?

We definitely want to hear from you, so leave a comment and share your thoughts and ideas with our readers and writers!

Hugs,

~Crystal

--- Interview by Nicole Pyles

WOW: First of all, let me just say congratulations on your book Heal Your Self with Journaling Power! What inspired you to write this book?

Mari: Thank you. I’m very proud of it and excited to get other journalers stories out into the world. As for inspiration, well, it was all part of my plan to have a Journaling Power trilogy. My first book was Journaling Power: How to Create The Happy, Healthy Life You Want To Live, a self-help memoir (a new book genre), which introduces journaling power to the world. This second book shares journaling journeys of just 10 of the thousands of people who use journaling daily to solve their emotional, physical, mental and spiritual problems. My third book will be more spiritual and closer to the format of Journaling Power and focus on transforming self-sabotage into everlasting self-love.

WOW: I love that this will become a trilogy! For those who were a fan of your first book, Journaling Power, what can they expect from your latest book Heal Your Self with Journaling Power?

Mari: It’s about the Journaling Journeys of ten journalers (and an update about my Journaling Journey now in its 21st year) with chapters on Nurturing Your Inner Wisdom, Managing Your Mind and Expressing Your Emotions and much, much more. They’re talented, creative people who use journaling to meet and master life’s challenges and readers will learn that journaling is the all-purpose self-healing tool. And…four of the stories are from guys. Yay!

WOW: The power of journaling is so profound! I was amazed to read your own story about how journaling put you back on the path to better health. I don't think people realize how journaling can transform you physically as well as emotionally and mentally. What would you say to them if they are in doubt about the impact of journaling?

Mari: Read my book! :) Journaling helps us reclaim our power that we’ve given away to the medical establishment. We are our own primary healthcare providers and we need to find health care resources that will partner with us to improve our health. I would encourage them to grab a pen and notebook, put a question like “How do I get off of all these drugs?” or “How do I get rid of these extra pounds I’ve been carrying around?” or “Why don’t my doctors listen to me?” or… and then write, write, write. They’ll be blown away to discover how disconnected they are from their body because they’ve been living in their head since forever. Journaling reconnects all the parts of us and makes us whole again.

WOW: Those are such powerful questions to start with - I love that! You teach and inspire people everywhere to transform their lives! What is it like to see people's lives changed because of the impact of journaling?

Mari: It’s the best part of my life to be celebrating people’s AHAs with them and to read and/or hear them realize they do have the power to discover, uncover and recover their authentic self and that they already have all the talents they need to pursue their passions and change the world.

WOW: How inspiring that is! What do you hope readers take away after reading your book?

Mari: That they accept that they are a universe of infinite possibilities and by using the ultimate self-empowerment tool, Journaling, they can heal the issues in their tissues that they’ve been carrying around since childhood, learn to live in the present from the inside out, and create the happy, healthy life they want to live.

WOW: I love that - "heal the issues in their tissues." What is next for you? What are you working on now?

Mari: I’ve just come out with a new CreateWriteNow.com self-healing journaling power workbook (I think that makes it our 22nd or so workbook). It’s called Empower Your Self which is our June featured workbook of the month.

I’m also planning out the third book in the Journaling Power trilogy, Create Unconditional Self-Love: A Journaling Power Book, which I’ll release March 15, 2022. I have a draft of the front cover and I’m currently working on the back cover. My book writing process is to create the front and back cover design and content, and then plan out the structure/flow, and then all that’s left to do is write, write, write.

WOW: I love your approach with writing and I can't wait to see what you publish next! Congratulations again on your book and good luck on the tour!
