Book Promotion 101

Thursday, April 05, 2018
You’ve written the book. You’ve edited until you can’t edit anymore. Your beta readers gave you the big thumbs-up. You’ve either found a publisher or decided to self-publish, and everything is ready to go.

Now, it’s time to promote.

Promote. The mere word is enough to strike immense fear and delightful giddiness into the heart of every writer. While it’s exciting to have your book out in the world, the thing won’t sell itself. And of course, for a first-time published author, cost is a factor. So, what can you do to promote your fabulous work on a budget? I have a few suggestions that are low-cost and will help you reach readers and entice them to read your book.

To start, business cards are a must. Create a logo and a slogan to help market your name. Remember that while your first book is no-doubt fabulous, you most likely will continue to write in the future, so you want to avoid having your book cover serve as your logo. Choose something that captures your personality and genre of choice - something that’s eye-pleasing and easy to remember. Hand these out liberally.

Embrace social media. For authors, I’ve found Twitter to be most effective. It’s tough to connect with strangers on Facebook, and there isn’t much more to do on Instagram than share your book cover over and over again. Having a website is a must, of course, and with WordPress and Google sites at your fingertips, there is no excuse not to have one.

Giveaways are a wonderful tool to draw readers in and keep them coming back for more.  To up the ante, try making book gift-baskets with items that promote the different themes and main ideas in your book. For example, a story which takes place in a coastal town could include an ocean-scented candle, some “bling” from the town where it takes place, and, of course, an autographed copy of your novel.

Make bookmarks and give them away to libraries, schools, and bookstores. These are low-cost and easy to make, and it’s a great opportunity to make your book cover shine. Make sure to include the title of your book and your name on the front and consider paying a little extra to include your website and social media handles on the back.

Last, but not least, brag. Brag about your book to anyone and everyone who will listen. Memorize your book pitch and recite it as often as possible. There is something magical about word-of-mouth promotion.

Sure, you can promote your book in expensive advertisements, but by using some of these budget-friendly ideas, you raise awareness of your amazing creation and increase sales!

I’d love to hear some of your low-cost options for promoting your books! Please share them in the comments!

Author Websites: Time Well Spent

Wednesday, July 12, 2017
In the midst of my first book release four years ago, I realized I needed a website. Desperate for a quick solution, as I didn’t have the time or the know-how to create my own webpage, I did what any self-respecting, resourceful teacher would do. I paid a student to do it for me.

The site had all the necessary information: contact info, my book cover and blurb, upcoming events like my online book tour (with Women On Writing, of course) and, as the coups de grâce, an unflattering photograph of myself coupled with my biography. The font on the website was adorable and artsy. A shadow of a cypress tree (my symbol of choice) crept across the top. At the time, it got the job done and required no work on my part.

I’m ashamed to admit that I didn’t look at it more than once or twice after it was created.

A few months ago, some inexplicable urge prompted me re-visit the website. Initially, I resisted this impulse. I knew what I’d find - something old and outdated. Because I didn’t create it, I had no clue how to update or change any of the information. Short of paying the yearly domain name costs, I didn’t know the first thing about my website.

In the interest of full-disclosure, I’d been avoiding the moment. I know myself, and once I saw the website again, I’d be unable to ignore it any longer. And there it was. Still the same contact info. Still the same book cover and blurb. Still the same announcement of my upcoming book tour from 2013 coupled with the unflattering picture. It was, in short, embarrassing.

As authors and writers, we often neglect our online image. While we love the written word, and there is nothing more exhilarating then holding our published books in our hands, we can’t ignore the power and influence the internet has on our success. When I discover a new author, I often visit their websites, seeking information. Maybe they have a book of which I’ve never heard. Maybe they are visiting my area soon and are offering book signings. Maybe I’m just curious so see what they look like. Either way, visiting their website helps me become acquainted with that author. We would never want to deny our loyal readers the same privilege.

Even if you are not yet published, a website is a great platform to share chapters of your writing. You can also blog on your website and gain followers that way. If you are published, it’s an effective method of sharing all your books with your readers. Use the website to connect with them on a more personal level. Give them a glimpse of who you are.

I’m proud to report that I worked up the courage to erase my old website and create a new one through WordPress. It wasn’t easy. I didn’t know what I was doing, and I learned through trial and error. There were some moments when I spewed four-letter words at the computer screen and huffed away in anger. Eventually, however, it began to take shape, and I regained control of my online image.

I’ve vowed to update my website at least once a month. It’s now clean and informative, and I couldn’t be happier. It’s also the first link on Google when you look up my name, which is exactly what I want.

Sometimes the one thing holding us back is our own self-doubt. Don’t make my mistake. There are many ways to create a simple website. All you need is the courage to start.

Branching Out with a WOW! Women on Writing 'On Air Tour'

Monday, June 19, 2017
Did you know you can market your book with a WOW! Book Blog Tour?

We've also recently branched out our marketing efforts and we offer a little different twist with our latest offering of a:

WOW! Authors on the Air Tour:

- Written pitch highlighting your book with interview topics sent to radio show hosts
- 4 or 5 podcast/radio spots
- Promotion of events on WOW's Twitter for each spot

You can purchase just this On Air Tour without the traditional Book Blog Tour, but we highly suggest it as an add-on to the traditional tour. Pairing the On Air Tour with the Basic Blog Tour means you'll reach those who enjoy reading book blogs, people on social media, AND those who listen to talk radio.

Radio is intimate because people can hear your voice and they feel much more connected that they would after just reading your bio and seeing your photo. The best part of our On Air Tour is that the station advertises your interview to their audience, so you are really reaching potential readers twice. You'll reach those who happen to have tuned in the day of the broadcast as well as anyone visiting their site or social media channels. Most stations also have an archive of their shows so your interview will be available after the day of the "stop". Some authors have even linked their favorite interviews to their personal web pages.

Are you thinking about your local radio station? Local stations are fabulous, but think global! We have worked with stations from Europe and you don't have to focus just in your area, we can branch out and send your pitch sheet (that we create) to our large network of radio producers.

Whether you've done a traditional blog tour in the past or are considering your options right now, please reach out to us at: blogtour@wow-womenonwriting.com and Jodi, Renee, or I would love to help you put something together!

Hugs,
~Crystal

Facebook Partying with Your Book - Let's Brainstorm!

Monday, April 24, 2017
Happy Monday from Wisconsin where it's finally warming up enough that we are thinking about lemonade and sunshine. (We however are still wearing sweatshirts with hoods or hats).

My dear friend Mari from Artotems recently invited me to partake in a Facebook book party for an author I had taken on a WOW! book blog tour a few months ago. The tour was for Ronald Chapman - as many of you will recall I spoke very highly of his books and his writing style in a blog post right here on the Muffin. For these reasons, I agreed to spend two hours of my Sunday afternoon chatting online with Ron about his work, his background, and we even got to play some Bingo and enjoy opportunities at a raffle basket and other great prizes.

The party was enjoyable but left me with lots of questions for authors who might be interested in such promotion.

** Have you ever done a Facebook book party? Did you do it yourself or did you hire a company to facilitate it for you? What is the ideal length of time for a Facebook book party? What's a fair price? What are you looking for as return on your investment?

** Have you ever participated in a Facebook book party? Was it for a single author or for many authors of a similar genre? What did you like most about the party? What would you change if you could?

I would truly love to hear from authors and readers about what I think could be an invaluable tool for authors and a lot of fun for readers.

Here are my thoughts:

Sunday afternoon from 2-4 seemed like a poor time for me. I felt like I was missing out on important time as a family. I would prefer something in the evening after my kiddos are in bed...but then again 6pm may be too late for some of my friends on the coast.

I enjoyed playing Bingo, but other parts of the party were draggy and I got a little bored (I got up and got another glass of lemonade and a cookie).

I feel I enjoyed the party more than others because I've already read and reviewed the books. This leads me to wonder if it's best to invite people quite far in advance and give them a tip that the party will be more fun if you read the book(s) first.

WOW! offers a variety of promotional opportunities and tours for authors - but as of now we don't offer any Facebook parties. Here's a list of what we currently offer: http://muffin.wow-womenonwriting.com/2017/04/promoting-your-book-with-wow-women-on.html . That said, what's important to you when choosing a company to do your Facebook book party or any other promotions? What types of companies do you steer clear of?

Please leave your thoughts and ideas as comments on this post. If you'd like more information about the promotions WOW! currently offers, please do not hesitate to contact Renee, Jodi, or myself at blogtour@wow-womenonwriting.com

Have a lovely Monday and a fabulous week!

Hugs,
~Crystal
