Take the Opportunity to Use Video to Promote Your Work

Thursday, August 06, 2020

Last week, I read a Publisher's Weekly article about the poem “And the People Stayed Home” by Kitty O’Meara. O’Meara wrote about how staying home because of COVID is an opportunity to slow the world down. When a friend asked to post it on Facebook, the poem went viral. This November, it will come out as a picture book from Tra Publishing.

It isn't surprising that this article has me thinking about opportunities. The article is about a picture book that focuses on opportunities. The same article talks about a writer who took the opportunity to share a poem and then recognized a new opportunity for it to become a picture book.

With this in mind, I read a blog post about book trailers and immediately started thinking about the variety of videos I could make.

For The Assassination of John F. Kennedy and The Murders of Tupac and Biggie, I could focus on the crimes themselves with a true crime-style story. Or I could discuss live television and how various television stations, including Channel 11 Lubbock where my father worked, covered the assassination.

I could interview my son about the geology class he took as a preschooler. They got to make fossil casts, hunt for fossils, and clean fossils before taking several home. That’s how we came to have a cluster of fossilized mollusks the size of a dinner plate. That would be a great introduction for The Evolution of Reptiles and The Evolution of Mammals.

If not that, I could record an evolutionary trivia challenge. Which animal is most closely related to the hippo? A whale, a rhino or a manatee?

Instead of focusing on my books for my first video, I decided to create a trailer for one of my WOW classes. I teach both "Writing Nonfiction for Children and Young Adults" and "Research: Prepping to Write Nonfiction for Children and Young Adults." I decided to start with the writing class. What do you include for a class trailer? I started with the title of the class, who should take the class, why they should take it, what they will study, and a bit about me.

I did this on Adobe Spark. There were many things to love about this program. Not only was it free but it was fairly intuitive. You can also use it to make slide shows, Instagram stories, web pages, and a variety of graphics. So far my experience is limited to videos.

The worst part was the microphone feature. You have to hold down the microphone graphic button. Easy peasy? Not when you are using a touch pad. Tap. Tap. TAP. “I know how to hold down a bleeping button. Of course it recorded that.” Next time I will make sure I have a mouse handy.

I’m not going to claim perfection but I think this turned out pretty well for a first effort.

How could you use a video to promote yourself and your work? Try to think outside the box.

Hugh Fritz launches his blog tour of Made to Be Broken; book one in the Mystic Rampage series

Monday, November 04, 2019
Flarence knows that Genies are supposed to help their masters by granting wishes, but he’s never been comfortable taking orders. To him, pummeling bad guys with magically enhanced weaponry feels like a much better way to use his powers.

Darren is a gangster who wants to leave his reckless life behind so he can focus on providing for his family. Unfortunately, there are people in the neighborhood who won’t let him move on.

Soleil is a humble man who tries to lead a passive lifestyle. In times of peace or times of war, he can be found cleaning his cafe or singing along with rock-’n’-roll tunes while tending to his houseplants.

Darren, Soleil, and Flarence will have to work together and step outside their comfort zones when a rogue Genie and a hot-headed police officer threaten the lives of their loved ones. Flarence will be challenged to work with a criminal, Soleil will be forced to leave his sanctuary and act to help his friends, and Darren will face the possibility that being a gentle and caring family man may not be an option for him.

About the Author
Hugh Fritz is a fan of monsters, mad scientists, sorcerers, and anything that involves being with incredible powers beating each other senseless. After years of writing research papers, he decided it was time to give reality a rest and let his imagination run wild. This is his first book, and it has been an illuminating experience making the transition from reader to author.

He was born in Chicago where he spent most of his life until moving to the Southwest in 2015. He finds inspiration bouncing ideas off other novelists in a critique group, but hours of television and finding the right songs to put him in the writing mood play an important role as well. He has no plans to end the Genies' adventures here, so be on the lookout for more magical mischief in the next book of the Mystic Rampage series.

Author Interview by Crystal J. Casavant-Otto

WOW: Thank you for being with us today and choosing WOW to help promote Made to be Broken! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and look forward to reading more of your work. I'm sure you are an avid reader as well. Who is your favorite author?

Hugh: I like Brian Harmon, who wrote two series of fantasy novels. One is Temple of the Blind and the other is called Rushed. I don’t like everything he does with his characters and their development, but I enjoy how his stories progress. Temple of the Blind had interesting puzzles and throughout Rushed the hero has found clever ways to defeat the antagonists.

WOW: I love that you can speak objectively about your favorite author - that's very insightful. When did you write your first book or poem? Did you know at a young age that you had a passion for this craft?

Hugh: The first piece I worked on continuously was for a club that I joined in high school. The title was Nidrack and it was a series of skits. Each member of the group was a character, and then there was one random character named Nidrack who I always played. I don’t remember anything inspiring the idea, other than the observation that most people were writing poems and short stories but nobody was bringing scripts to the meetings so I gave it a shot.

WOW: Sounds like a great group to help inspire someone like yourself. Let's talk about the opposite of being inspired - How do you deal with rejection and what advice do you have for other up and coming authors?

Hugh: I treat rejection as if it’s a negative review. I read through it a few times, take a moment to reflect on it, and then go about my day. Before making a creative piece public it’s important to realize there will be people who hate and criticize it, sometimes in a blunt and offensive manner. It’s just going to happen. There will be times to defend your work, but there will also be times to accept the blows. Agents and publishers are usually busy with other inquiries, so they probably don’t have time to listen to me trying to change their mind. Therefore, rejection letters are times to practice admitting to suffering a setback and finding a way to move on.

WOW: What great advice for a writer at any level.  How do you feel about critique and writing groups?

Hugh: I’ve been going to a critique group weekly for a few years and the people there are the reason I’ve been published. In addition to improving the quality of my writing, they’ve given me advice about marketing and helped me find places to pitch my work. I hadn’t heard of the Southwest Writers until someone in the critique group asked if anyone wanted to go to one of their conferences. I accepted and it was where I met a representative for my current publisher, Golden Word Books.

WOW: Well, I'm glad I asked that question; it may help some of your fellow authors see the benefit of those groups. Thank you for your honesty!

If your book was made into a movie, what song should be played as the title track?

Hugh: I’ve thought about this before because I like listening to music while I’m writing and I’ve settled on theme songs for my main characters. If a movie were to open by introducing Darren, I imaging the song being Clint Eastwood by the Gorillaz. If it opens with Soleil, it would be Watching the Wheels by John Lennon. For Flarence, it would be Pompeii by Bastille.

WOW: As we wrap up our time together today, I simply must know, what's next for you?

Hugh: For the moment I’m working through Mystic Rampage 3, and making revisions to part 2. When this series is finished I plan on writing a more typical fantasy book. It was fun writing about a group of genies in modern-day Chicago, but I have another story about a dragon, a farmer, and a knight in an imaginary kingdom.

WOW: Thank you so much for your time today - I'm sure readers will delight to learn more as they follow you through the tour. We look forward to your tour and future releases!

Welcome to Maravilla by R. Douglas Clark - Book Blog Tour, Author Interview, and Giveaway!

Monday, October 14, 2019
The tiny hamlet of Maravilla, New Mexico is not immune to modern-day problems. But the citizens of Maravilla have their own special problems, as well:

A developer wants to build a Christian-themed amusement park next to Maravilla’s historic church.

The county line runs right through the town, splitting it in two.

And the government is threatening to close their post office!

Into this muddle steps Jake Epstein, a young writer from the big city. Jake is seeking peace and quiet to finish his current project: a science fiction story in which adventuress Tai-Keiko must deliver the secret formula for Zeton-9—with the evil Krossarians in hot pursuit.

But then reality and science fiction converge—and Tai-Keiko finds herself in present-day Maravilla, face to face with a gobsmacked Jake.

Join Jake on this comic run along the dusty roads of Maravilla, and find out who won the fight between Father Ignatius and the heathen pig farmer. How a basketball game changed the fate of the town. And was that white flash in the sky a UFO?

About the Author
R. Douglas Clark was born in Vermont, grew up in Colorado, attended college in Chicago, and received a Master's degree in music from Brown University. Seeing no future for himself in academia, he spent a year in the Oregon woods, living in a primitive cabin, writing music reviews and cultural commentary for magazines and newspapers. Next stop, Eugene, Oregon where he spent 20 damp years as a bootstrap businessman, father and musician. On a vacation trip, he and his wife, Shelley, fell in love with sunny northern New Mexico and subsequently moved there. After four years running Boys and Girls Clubs in Chimayó and Abiquiú--and another four, running a U-pick raspberry farm--he retired to write fiction full time.

Author Interview by Crystal J. Casavant-Otto

WOW: Thank you for being with us today and choosing WOW to help promote Welcome to Maravilla! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and look forward to reading more of your work. I'm sure you are an avid reader as well. Who is your favorite author?

R. Douglas: Please, don’t make me pick one! My standard is: will the book stand up to a second reading? I admire John Steinbeck for his gritty realism (The Grapes of Wrath) and his absurdist humor (Cannery Row). Too old school? Try Richard Price (Lush Life). Humor? Can’t beat Joseph Heller’s Catch-22. I love Zadie Smith for her intelligent and compassionate writing (Swing Time). I can’t get enough literary adventure, such as Jennifer Egan’s Manhattan Beach or Esi Edugyan’s Half-Blood Blues. But favorite? Gotta go with Gabriel García Márquez. Man, what a writer!

WOW: It definitely is difficult to chose just one, isn't it? Thanks for sharing with us!

What or Whom has been most influential in your writing career and how so?

R. Douglas: I can divide the influences on my writing career into three parts: reading, writing and life experience. Reading taught me about the elements of fiction. Writing made me put in the work it takes to become an author (like anything else). Life experience provided the material I needed to have something to write about.

WOW: See? I guessed from the start you were an avid reader - now I'm hoping you'll share more secrets - what have you learned during the publishing process and what would you do differently next time or what advice do you have for others?

R. Douglas: The standard publishing model—based on sending a query letter and 25-or-so pages to a publisher—clearly doesn’t work. You wait forever to hear back, and you rarely do. At best, you get a form letter. The slush pile grows. There are too many writers seeking publishers, and too many publishers unwilling to take a chance on a new novelist. Going the route of signing up with an agent is hardly any better. Good agents are overwhelmed with manuscripts, too. Self-publishing? It’s going to cost you a couple of grand, either for the publishing or for the marketing, or both. My advice? Love the writing process. Join a writer’s group. Find an agent.

WOW: That's absolute great advice and you'll save me from asking one of my favorite questions which is how you feel about writer's groups - so let's get right to the future excitement: What’s next for you?

R. Douglas: I’m working on a new novel. And looking for an agent.

WOW: I'm sure it won't take long for you to find with all your talent! And last but not least - many of us struggle with finding the perfect space and I'm not sure it even matters, so give us a glimpse - What does your writing space look like?

R. Douglas: My writing space is a mess. There are piles of paper, books, a synthesizer, a printer, and a scanner. There is a desk, and in the middle of that, my computer. Behind me it is floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, filled with books, old CDs, photographs, etc. But in front of me is a large window that looks out on a proliferation of bushes, trees and the blue, blue sky of New Mexico.

WOW: I'm sure others can relate to the messiness of your space - (myself included) - but it sounds like those blue skies can be pretty inspirational! And as our time comes to a close, thank YOU for being inspirational to others - and thank you so much for your time today - I'm sure readers will delight to learn more as they follow you through the tour. We look forward to your tour and future releases!

Too Much Me

Thursday, July 06, 2017
Recently I asked my daughter if she would read an article about me on a blog, and share it on my Facebook page.
"Why?"
"Because," I said, (like an 8-year-old).
"It's very good," she said, as she looked up from her phone and wondered why I was so concerned."
"It's not that I didn't think she'd do a good job, it's that sometimes I'm uncomfortable in the spotlight."
"Don't you like the attention?"
"No," I said. "It's too much me."
"That's weird," she said.
"I know."
"Didn't you do public relations for a living?"
"For someone else," I said, "and I was good at it, but when it comes to me, I'm not good at promoting myself."

Is that shyness, or introversion, or something else? Some people bask in the limelight, but I don't feel comfortable if someone else has put me there. If I can control it, then it's not as bad, and at times I even take the lead and promote my work. Take this blog, for instance, if I want to write about myself I can, but when I put the control in someone else's hands I feel like one of those prisoners walking out of solitary confinement after a couple of weeks -- the light burns my eyes.

As a writer, I go back and forth between extroversion and introversion, although not in a straight line. To be completely honest, I wrote this post a couple of months ago, and was not sure about posting it because it reveals personal information. And I do believe that we all have some of both characteristics in us. Some days I feel confident and want people to hear what I have to say. Other days I want to stay in bed and read a book.

What about you? Are you fearless when it comes to promoting yourself? Or do you shy away from disclosing personal information, or promoting yourself and your books. There's no right or wrong, but I wonder why some of us are so comfortable, and others not so much.

Facebook Partying with Your Book - Let's Brainstorm!

Monday, April 24, 2017
Happy Monday from Wisconsin where it's finally warming up enough that we are thinking about lemonade and sunshine. (We however are still wearing sweatshirts with hoods or hats).

My dear friend Mari from Artotems recently invited me to partake in a Facebook book party for an author I had taken on a WOW! book blog tour a few months ago. The tour was for Ronald Chapman - as many of you will recall I spoke very highly of his books and his writing style in a blog post right here on the Muffin. For these reasons, I agreed to spend two hours of my Sunday afternoon chatting online with Ron about his work, his background, and we even got to play some Bingo and enjoy opportunities at a raffle basket and other great prizes.

The party was enjoyable but left me with lots of questions for authors who might be interested in such promotion.

** Have you ever done a Facebook book party? Did you do it yourself or did you hire a company to facilitate it for you? What is the ideal length of time for a Facebook book party? What's a fair price? What are you looking for as return on your investment?

** Have you ever participated in a Facebook book party? Was it for a single author or for many authors of a similar genre? What did you like most about the party? What would you change if you could?

I would truly love to hear from authors and readers about what I think could be an invaluable tool for authors and a lot of fun for readers.

Here are my thoughts:

Sunday afternoon from 2-4 seemed like a poor time for me. I felt like I was missing out on important time as a family. I would prefer something in the evening after my kiddos are in bed...but then again 6pm may be too late for some of my friends on the coast.

I enjoyed playing Bingo, but other parts of the party were draggy and I got a little bored (I got up and got another glass of lemonade and a cookie).

I feel I enjoyed the party more than others because I've already read and reviewed the books. This leads me to wonder if it's best to invite people quite far in advance and give them a tip that the party will be more fun if you read the book(s) first.

WOW! offers a variety of promotional opportunities and tours for authors - but as of now we don't offer any Facebook parties. Here's a list of what we currently offer: http://muffin.wow-womenonwriting.com/2017/04/promoting-your-book-with-wow-women-on.html . That said, what's important to you when choosing a company to do your Facebook book party or any other promotions? What types of companies do you steer clear of?

Please leave your thoughts and ideas as comments on this post. If you'd like more information about the promotions WOW! currently offers, please do not hesitate to contact Renee, Jodi, or myself at blogtour@wow-womenonwriting.com

Have a lovely Monday and a fabulous week!

Hugs,
~Crystal
