A 5 Star Review of Michelle Dim-St. Pierre's "Bloody Coffee"

Wednesday, May 22, 2019
Bloody Coffee is a complex, suspenseful, and engrossing tale of doubts, trust, budding romance, and two bullets.

Eighteen-year-old Leigh arrives at a Tel Aviv hospital, seeking information about her probable father, Dr. Sloan, who had a cardiac arrest right after they met for the first time. As she stands next to her father's bed and watches him, her past, present and future collide. Despite the advice of those around her, Leigh decides to face the challenges of the legal system in Israel. She obtains a court order for a paternity test and confronts Sloan. During her quest to find the truth about her biological father, Leigh is exposed to violent religious intolerance, faces life in a country where church and state are not separate, and meets the man who may be her first true love. Will she change her view of the world she thought she knew? Will she forgive her mother? Will a gunshot change her attitude towards her probable father? And, what will she say to Steve, the only father she ever really had?

*****The 5 Star Review by Crystal J. Casavant-Otto !*****

Bloody Coffee is a fast-paced, character-driven novel, set in war torn Tel Aviv with a storyline and characters you can’t help but love! Leigh is a character I related to from the very first chapter of Bloody Coffee. I admire anyone who seeks answers and is brave enough to leave their comfort zone to find those answers. Leigh is just 18 and yet she set out alone to an unfamiliar country. She focused on her goal and didn’t let fear stand in her way. Michelle Dim-St. Pierre has written her main character with such depth that readers will be sure to fall in love with her. She’s strong yet unsure of herself - confused and searching. She’s perfectly imperfect and very approachable. I was cheering for her through each twist and turn in this suspenseful story of trust, doubt, and romance. Even protests, rockets, and death wouldn’t be enough to deter Leigh from finding her biological father.

Leigh’s character may have initially drawn me into the story, but the storyline of Bloody Coffee is interesting and unexpected. Just when I thought I had it figured out, another plot twist came into play and had me questioning how things were going to end. A combination of my love and admiration for the characters in the book as well as my inquisitive nature kept me glued to my seat wanting more. This was a fast read because I didn’t want to put the book down until I had all the answers I was searching for. Michelle Dim-St. ‘s use of sensual details and dramatic scenes drew me in as a reader and made me feel as if I were involved in Leigh’s journey. I felt what she felt, and had the same desire for answers and closure. The suspense kept me engaged throughout the book. When friendships fell apart and people started dying I thought for sure Leigh was going to give up and she forged forward even more intent on answers.

A favorite scene for me was at a low point for Leigh – she was questioning if she had made the right decision. Her maturity and ultimately her tenacity and decision to push forward is admirable.
(pg 168)
My mind was busy churning over her past and my present.

I traveled back to the pages of my mother’s journal, thinking how her affair with Sloan actually tore us apart. I believe that sharing her secrets created nothing but distance between us. My relationship with her seemed insignificant in comparison with the one she had with Sloan. I felt as if I’d entered a competition that I could never win. I sensed that he didn’t have enough love for the both of us, that I would always be on the outside looking in. I didn’t want to get hurt any more than what I already had, so I took the easy road, rejecting him. I didn’t need him anyway. Suddenly, the realization hit me – it had been a mistake to come looking for him.

Will I ever be able to put this dismantled gigantic puzzle together or will I live the truth of having no place among them, forever an outsider?

There wasn’t any point in Bloody Coffee where I felt the pace slowed. The author used just the right amount of detail to keep things interesting without being either boring or tedious. Dim-St. Pierre brought to life the sights and sounds of Tel Aviv during a tumultuous time. This is a fast-paced story and even the secondary characters are relatable and intriguing. The relationships and alliances were lifelike and fluid throughout. Leigh’s introspective scenes felt very real; her authenticity was a breath of fresh air. When I was wondering how much more she could bear, Leigh was asking herself “is this confrontation necessary right now?” and it was easy to experience the frustrations in her quest for truth. As Leigh navigated the relationships in her life (old and new), she was cautious while still being open to the endless possibilities – she’s an incredibly believable main character. This is a beautiful story with a flawed and very human main character I couldn’t help but love.

Book Review of The Vines We Planted by Joanell Serra

Saturday, May 05, 2018
About the Book:

In the heart of the California wine country, secrets seem to grow on the vines that Uriel Macon’s family have tended for generations.

Uriel, the winery’s young widower, steers clear of complicated relationships. He prefers the lonely comfort of his vineyard and his horses, until he is reminded of his love affair with Amanda Scanlon; a relationship that ended when she abruptly left the country years ago under a cloud of mystery.

When Amanda returns to Sonoma because of a family crisis, she tries to mend the broken relationships she left behind. In addition, she seeks the truth about her parents’ complicated history and her own parentage.

But Amanda’s unveiling of the past has devastating consequences. In the midst of California’s beautiful Sonoma Valley, the Scanlon family struggles to overcome harsh realities with dignity and grace.

Both Amanda and Uriel stretch to take care of their families, which are facing immigration issues, marital crises, and loss. While navigating these challenges, the couple must decide if they trust themselves to love again, or to finally let each other go.

-----5 Star Review by Crystal J. Casavant-Otto

There are so many things to love about The Vines We Planted by Joanell Serra. I will try to hit the high points but definitely recommend everyone grab their own copy. This is an easy read you will devour in one or two sittings; most definitely a book you won't want to put down!

The characters in The Vines We Planted are deep and very well written. Any time I read about human emotion, trials, love, etc... it is very important the author connect me as a reader with the characters I am reading about. Serra did this beautifully. As I was reading I didn't find myself wishing the author had included a few more details, better dialogue, etc... I can say without hesitation I wouldn't change anything with how well each character is depicted. In fact, I was very surprised when I learned this was Serra's debut novel, she writes like a seasoned author with several novels under her belt. One of my favorite lines turned out to be this one:

"Sheila's eyes flapped wide open, like painted butterfly wings"

I have heard many comparisons, but never eyes to painted butterfly wings. This line stuck with me like so many other  visuals in this beautiful book.

I have never traveled to California's beautiful Sonoma Valley, but somehow I feel I now have. Reading The Vines We Planted transported me as a reader; only a skilled author can manage such a feat. The imagery is impressive and particularly moving - and the gorgeous book cover doesn't hurt either!

This is a quick read. I didn't want to stop until the very end and I'm hoping Serra will be writing more about the Sonoma Valley and the Scanlon family. The Vines We Planted is an intricately woven tale I would absolutely recommend to a friend.

Book Review: Jodi Picoult's "Change of Heart" by Crystal J. Casavant-Otto

Wednesday, August 09, 2017
About Change of Heart:

The acclaimed #1 New York Times bestselling author presents a spellbinding tale of a mother's tragic loss and one man's last chance at gaining salvation.

Can we save ourselves, or do we rely on others to do it?
Is what we believe always the truth?

One moment June Nealon was happily looking forward to years full of laughter and adventure with her family, and the next, she was staring into a future that was as empty as her heart. Now her life is a waiting game. Waiting for time to heal her wounds, waiting for justice. In short, waiting for a miracle to happen.

For Shay Bourne, life holds no more surprises. The world has given him nothing, and he has nothing to offer the world. In a heartbeat, though, something happens that changes everything for him. Now, he has one last chance for salvation, and it lies with June's eleven-year-old daughter, Claire. But between Shay and Claire stretches an ocean of bitter regrets, past crimes, and the rage of a mother who has lost her child.

Would you give up your vengeance against someone you hate if it meant saving someone you love? Would you want your dreams to come true if it meant granting your enemy's dying wish?

Once again, Jodi Picoult mesmerizes and enthralls readers with this story of redemption, justice, and love.

Review by Crystal J. Casavant-Otto:

I absolutely love the writing of Jodi Picoult. She draws me in each and every time. Her writing is poetic and the descriptions help you see each character so you can really experience the emotions and plot. In Change of Heart I had it figured out from the beginning, but still read each and every word - and enjoyed them immensely. I had a deep desire to know the "why" of the story and how all the pieces of the puzzle were going to fit together. This is a rather long book and I read it in a single day. I could not tear myself away.

The flow of Picoult's writing is definitely a work of art and though some might say the ending is a let down or it's predictable, there was nothing about this book that left me feeling let down. In fact, I would love to know more about each character and the stories of their lives before Change of Heart as well as in the aftermath of this tear-jerking tale.

A book I will definitely read again, and a style so many authors can learn from. A tale so beautifully woven together it reminds me of a hand-made quilt. Filled with love and emotion. Each page to be savored.

"My Name is Wonder" Book Review by Crystal J. Casavant-Otto

Wednesday, October 05, 2016
5 Star Review:

My Name is Wonder is a tale of adventure that will have you thinking from the first page until well after you’ve closed the book. This beautifully written novel chronicles the transcendent adventures of a little goat with big dreams. At first I thought this was a children's book until I took a closer look. In as much as "A Killer's Grace" was a story about the dark side of life, "My Name is Wonder" is a book for adults to help get them into the child's mindset of wonder. It's not a children's book, it's a book for your inner child in my opinion. This is a difficult thing to explain. Have you ever spent time with a 2 year old who asks all sorts of questions? Questions that make you cock your head and furrow your brow? For example, my 2 year old recently asked me to explain why he couldn't have his cookie at the beginning of his meal. It would have been easy to dismiss the question and reply "because I said so", but children's minds are always trying to understand the why of life. Why do you have to wash your hands before lunch? Now that's an easy one to answer because of germs and such, but I'm still wondering why you have to wait until the end of the meal to enjoy the cookie. Don't you sometimes get full toward the end of the meal and enjoy the cookie less because your tummy is already a bit over-full? Wouldn't you have enjoyed that cookie more had you had it at the beginning of the meal? Wouldn't it be tastier if you ran out of room for brussel sprouts instead of running out of room for cheesecake?

Why are we talking about this? Well - I wanted to get you into the mindset of wondering. Wondering why one thing is acceptable when another isn't. Wondering how we came up with a particular rule or thought process. When we stop the childlike wondering, we start simply going through the motions instead of having a mindful presence in our own lives. That's how I felt while reading "My Name is Wonder". Yes, the characters are fictitious, but the moral of the story applies to each and every one of us. This book is written beautifully by a man who I find to be very insightful. This book is guaranteed to keep you thinking long after you've closed the cover.

I find myself referring back to sections of My Name is Wonder as I go about my daily tasks. That's always the sign of a well written book; it sticks with you. I certainly hope to read more from Ronald Chapman, because I've really enjoyed his style and insight.

Tips for Writing Reviews from an Amazon Top Reviewer

Saturday, August 20, 2016
I love when authors send signed copies!!!!
Here I am with Donald Dempsey's Memoir
I started writing book reviews a few years ago. I would publish them on my blog, Goodreads, Amazon, and Ezine Articles. In the beginning, I was reading because I wanted to improve my writing skills. I figured it was the least I could do for the hard working authors. There’s something wonderful to be said for any book and I wanted to tell the world. All of a sudden, authors were approaching me. They were offering me free copies of their books if I would write an honest review. Then I took my current position with WOW! Women on Writing and as they say, the rest is history!

It’s not really that straight forward. Someone approached me asking “can we send you some of our chocolate covered peanut butter cups to try and review?” and that’s what sparked the rest of my reviews. Now, the UPS truck pulls in the yard every day bearing gifts in exchange for my reviews. My dear friend Michelle recently told me she was having trouble writing reviews. She came to me for advice and I want to share with you not only the story of how I became an Amazon Top Reviewer, but also a few tips for writing your own reviews:

1) Read through the description of the product or the summary of the book first. Make sure you have what you expected you were receiving. If there’s a discrepancy, you’ll want to let the company or the author know right away and you may want to include that in your review.

2) Look at the questions other people are writing. Look at the other reviews. Review the comments on the product/book. If there’s a way for you to include commentary about those concerns, do so in your review. (ie: if a book received a 1 star review from someone stating the author was whining about their life while writing their memoir, you may want to include a sentence about how you felt concerning the author’s storytelling.)

3) Talk about what sets this product/story apart from the others. You may have used many flashlights in your life, but this one may be brighter, the battery may last longer, it may fit in your hand better, etc…or in the case of a book, there may be many memoirs on the market today, but this one may have touched you because _____________________, etc.

4) Speak from your heart. In the case of a book review, you’ll want to talk about how you felt when you finished reading the book. Did you want the book to continue because you couldn’t bear to part with the characters because they were written so well? In the case of a product, how did it make your life easier/better?

As a reviewer, it isn’t your job to “sell” the product or book. You don’t need to include the details that are already provided, unless it makes it special. If you say “this book is about Donald Dempsey’s amazing life” when the book is clearly being marketed as a memoir, you are going to come off looking silly. You may want to say “as Donald Dempsey shares the pivotal moments of his life, I felt my heart breaking for the young man he was while I was cheering on the man he is today. He has overcome incredible obstacles and has become a hero in so many ways.”

Use your writing skills to make your reviews interesting and informational. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and read something you wouldn’t usually chose or try a product you haven’t considered before. Had I said no to those peanut butter cups, I probably wouldn’t be wearing this great free shirt and leggings! Reviewing is a fun way to try new things and it’s the best way to thank an author!

Leave a link in the comments for your favorite book or book review – we would love to hear from you!
