--- Interview by Nicole Pyles
WOW: First of all, congratulations on your devotional, The Way of Gratitude. What inspired you to write this book?
Hannah: Thank you! With all of my writing, I’m inspired by my own experience in some way. For this devotional in particular, a lot of identity work went into the devotional reflections. I wanted to invite readers to interact with Scripture and gratitude in a way that reminds them of who God really is and of who he made them to be. It’s a book about gratitude, but it’s a book about identity, too. I love the action steps you give through each devotion that leads to greater gratitude.
WOW: I love that! Why is being thankful so important for a deeper walk with God?
Hannah: We read about gratitude all throughout Scripture. It was part of the sacrificial system in the Old Testament, spoken by Jesus at the Last Supper, and is reflected in the beginning of all of Paul’s letters. It’s also a fruit that the Holy Spirit grows in us as we grow closer to him. It is undoubtedly part of a thriving relationship with God; something that both we participate in and that the Holy Spirit grows us in.
WOW: It really is such an important part of our walk with God. Who is this book right for?
Hannah: I love this question because the reader was so clear in my mind as I wrote it. This book is for anyone who has a full schedule and doesn't always prioritize time alone with God. It’s for the people who are tired of wondering if you're "doing the right thing" to live out their faith. It’s for the people who love Jesus but don’t always love the church. I think the book also speaks to those who are "successful" in life (however they would define that), but they know something is still missing from their life. Anyone who wants to cultivate a lifestyle of gratitude through a lens of Scripture would love this book.
WOW: That's awesome. You share a lot of helpful reflections on your blog, sharing your personal walk with God and the insights you gain each day. How do you know just what to say that resonates with people?
Hannah: This is such a compliment, thank you. I’m glad people resonate with my words. I think they do because I have a deep, abiding relationship with Jesus but it’s not been without pain. I’ve experienced hurt from people in the church, I’ve misunderstood and been confused by Scripture, and I’ve been let down a lot by the people and places that promise love, acceptance, and hope. But despite this pain, my faith in Jesus has never wavered. I read about who he is and it doesn’t always align with my negative experiences. When I write, I try to share from this perspective; one of truth, encouragement, and remembering that in the end it’s all going to be okay because of faith in Jesus.
WOW: I love that you do that, and it's reflected in your writing. What are you working on now that you can tell us about?
Hannah: My next devotional book is in the works! It’s based on the “Hall of Faith” in Hebrews 11, exploring the people and defining characteristics of their faith listed there. I’m excited to share about the history of our faith and why it’s important still today. But for any readers who can’t wait for that to come out, I share a new devotional each month with my email newsletter subscribers which they can sign up for on my website, www.hannahrowenfry.com.
WOW: I can't wait! Any lasting thoughts you want to share with those who are curious about the benefits of greater gratitude and thankfulness in their life?
Hannah: My biggest piece of advice for those who want to explore gratitude in more depth is to get quiet, sit with God, and see what happens. Life wasn’t always full of constant stimulation from the radio, TV, phones, traffic, and lights, and it was hard even then! Taking a few moments to turn off all the noise, limit distractions (physical or mental), and remember how much you have to be grateful for is an instant perspective shifter. Try to not approach this silence with any expectations, just enjoy the calm. In these moments, overwhelm becomes peace. Suddenly you no longer need a new car, you just need to clean the one you already have and maybe get a new air freshener; you don’t need a new house, you just need to rearrange your living room furniture. God has been making order out of chaos since Genesis 1, and these moments we abide with him and find gratitude for our lives is just another opportunity for him to bring peace to our overwhelm. Gratitude is a little thing that makes a big difference, instantly.
WOW: What wonderful advice. Thank you so much for your time with us. Best luck on your book!
