Mental Pause
by Anne Louise O'Connell

Abbie Slocum, a forty-something, average, middle of the road, housewife and mother of teenage twin boys, tries desperately to keep her outwardly idyllic life together while spiraling into a dark pit of menopausal insanity. Her mind races with suicidal, murderous thoughts so outside of her normal character that it frightens her. The only person she can share the graphic images from her hormonally addled mind with is her best friend, Rachel, recently separated, and the mysterious and titillating Joan, a new friend from Rachel's singles support group. Women have survived this female passage of life since the beginning of time! Why was Abbie having so much trouble handling it?

As the battle to maintain her sanity rages on, Abbie, Rachel and Joan stumble into unfortunate, borderline comical, circumstances that lead to wild nights, experimenting with drugs and two suspicious deaths. Abbie's cop husband, Conrad, tries desperately to understand what's happening to his normally sweet wife. While vying for promotion, his family gets embroiled in a media frenzy that swirls around a murder trial in which Abbie is the primary suspect. Abbie takes the reader on an old jalopy ride of uncharacteristic outbursts and wild escapism that leads to tragedy and finally, into court where she just might have to plead 'temporary insanity.'

Studio owner Katherine Carrington is grappling with complicated cash-flow issues of her own making. As her stress level rises, her demeanor ricochets between controlling and neurotic. Katherine’s identity is defined by her ownership of the studio, and losing it would mean losing herself.

Aging playboy Marcos Stephanos, dance master and studio manager, is too distracted by the disarming new-hire Paige to focus on the warning signs of Katherine’s erratic behavior. Will his nonchalance cost him his career?

Top dance instructor Tony Moreno finds flirting with Paige so tantalizing he misses practice sessions with his ambitious, professional partner, Sylvie Goldstein. Instead of burning up the floor with Tony, Sylvie is smoking with resentment against her unwitting rival, Paige.

Will misunderstood intentions and ego-driven altercations force the exposure of secrets and betrayals at the studio so many call home? Who will adapt and who will retreat when expectations clash with reality, and the status quo suddenly shifts?

Laced with humor, Dancing Between the Beats offers an insider’s view of the world of ballroom dance, along with a smattering of off-beat insights about relationships.

Trouble signing up for emails with 3-4 authors.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Hi Kari and Anonymous ~ Thank you for letting us know about the trouble signing up for the authors' email lists. We've contacted them and requested direct links. :) I tried the forms and was able to sign up for all of them except for one, so it must be a technical issue with the type of browser or using mobile vs desktop. We'll get it fixed as soon as we hear back from them. Thank you! :)

  72. My husband and I and our little dog Casey just moved to a farmhouse at the first of April. We are on a parcel of land with 5 farms. Our home was built in 1874 and it completely restored with original floors, door casings and even the original pantry door! We love it here and just have to walk to one of the many farms to get fresh eggs, beef, pork, produce, etc. I am glad I have the distraction of unpacking, decorating and exploring the farm to keep me occupied while the quarantine is still in place. Thanks for the super giveaway opportunity.

  74. We're doing okay here in eastern PA. Hubby still working (safely, only about 4 of them in his building so they can stay away from each other). Son (high school senior) doing online school, and doing great with it, but of course sad to be ending his high school career at home instead of with friends. And my life not that much different, except shopping less. Always looking for more good books to read.

  75. This is such an exciting giveaway! I am a senior in college who isn't getting to experience the final semester of my year or an in-person graduation. I have been reading back home to pass the time every day, and I would love more options! :)

And lets not forget to mention all the laundry I can get done while working. LOL!

I have spent my time in quarantine sick and could really use some new reading material to celebrate testing negative twice for COVID. I have put my time to good use, however, and have written about COVID for millenials for my monthly health column.

  95. On 3/22/2020 I traveled by car 8 hours to care for 2 grandsons (8 and 19 months) while their parents work full time from home. My son-in-law is also going to law school and had a mock trial via Zoom yesterday. The 8 year old is trying to settle into schoolwork via Zoom meetings and SeeSaw and is taking an extra math class. There was quite a learning curve to pace the time for schoolwork and the pull of games to play on the internet. The "baby" likes having stories read and going for walks in and out of the stroller.
