But before we get into what our readers thought, here's more about the book:

Helen is childless and widowed after a long marriage and gets a second chance with a long-lost love. But she's grieving her hidden regrets. She bonds with her quiet kindergarten student and doubts the girl's struggling single mother, Charlene, is fit to parent.

Charlene's hiding a secret of her own, and she resents Helen's interference. She's determined to make a better life for her young daughter, the teenage boy her ex left behind, and the baby on the way when a scarred veteran offers to lend a hand.

A tragedy no one sees coming forces the two women to unite, as small-town bias threatens to destroy innocent lives. But first, Helen and Charlene must confront the vacancy in their hearts. As they do, can they find new strength, acceptance, and a second chance at love?

About the Author, Jann Alexander

Jann Alexander is an author, photographer, and public speaker. Her characters face down their fears in novels that are as close to true as fiction can get. As a central Texas resident for over two decades, she created the Vanishing Austin photography series and speaks on all things Texas to groups and book clubs. Jann’s lifelong storytelling habit and her passion for Texas history merged to become The Dust Series, comprising the historical novel Unspoken and the fictionalized true-crime novel Vacancy. She holds a B.S. from the University of Maryland. When Jann is not reading, writing, or creating, she bikes, hikes, skis, and kayaks. Jann always brakes for historical markers.

-- Interview by Nicole Pyles

WOW: Congrats on your book, Vacancy! What inspired your book?

Jann: Thank you! Vacancy had been germinating since 2005. That’s when two articles on the front page of a major newspaper’s Metro section jumped out at me. One story was joyful, the other horrific, and the characters in each were unrelated. But I wanted to understand how the two events came about, and why blame was being cast in a small, rural town.

WOW: I love that real events in the news inspire you. Can you tell us more about that inspiration?

Jann: I was inspired to meld two unrelated true stories (from 2005) together into one novel, to explore the complexities of each situation. I created a mythical town in the Texas Panhandle for its small-town environment, where scenarios of second chances, and tragedies nobody saw coming, were believable. Names and locations were changed, and new fictional characters added, in my effort to work through how a terrible tragedy can envelop even those who are innocent.

WOW: I think that's amazing that you did that. You also have a skill for vivid setting! How do you capture such realistic scenes and surroundings?

Jann: Thanks for crediting me with vivid settings! I was an art director, photographer, and painter before I turned to writing novels, and that visual sense never leaves you. My eyes are like a camera that’s constantly clicking and recording, and I study everything around me in a scene. It’s a game I play, absorbing all the details. And when I am writing, I research, which involves lots of old photographs and old maps. That helps me visualize what I’m putting words to.

WOW: I'll bet! I love that you set your book in Texas, your own home state. What do you love most about setting your books there?

Jann: The funny thing about Texas is that it’s my home state now, but not until I moved here from the D.C. area in 2004. In order to get to know my new state, I began to research it, travel around it, explore it, and once I uncovered some of its hidden histories and its wacky past, I couldn’t resist creating a mythical town in the Texas Panhandle as a setting for my books. Vacancy was actually the first novel in "The Dust Series" I wrote, but it’s second to be published. Each book in the series can stand alone, with the setting in small-town Texas tying them together, as characters connect, or move in, and move out, of subsequent books. Like people do, in towns across Texas.

WOW: It seems like Texas pulled you right in! What draws to writing historical fiction?

Jann: I have always had a passion for times past, and since I can’t travel back in time, the next best thing I can do is imagine it—and write it. This gives me a reason to dig into old photographs, old maps, old paintings, oral histories, and out-of-print books for visualizing how things once were. I collect things from my favorite eras in U.S. history, too, such as a 1930 typewriter, 1940s Bakelite radios, even older boxes of cartes-de-visites, 1950s fold-out post cards, 1930s-40s refrigerator pitchers, hand-tinted photographs, colorful fruit crate labels, even books about the architecture, styles, and décor from former eras.

WOW: That's a fun collection to have! Where do you like to write? Can you share pictures?

Jann: I have made myself a great writing studio that can double as a research center, art studio, and place to read. I love going into my writing studio, and can’t imagine writing anywhere else. I have shelves for lots of books with my collectibles interspersed, storage for art and photo supplies, a great view of live oak trees and birds, a door to our deck for my Texas mutt, Ruby, and a door that’s sized for me, too.

WOW: Where you like to write is beautiful! What are you working on now that you can tell us about?

Jann: I’m doing final edits on my third novel in The Dust Series, titled Overdue: Riding the Rails Across Texas in Hard Times. In the Texas Dust Bowl, fourteen-year-old Will Becker sets out for home but keeps riding the rails, chasing education, work, and a way to save his family farm—until history turns every detour into a reckoning.

Thanks for asking such fun questions!

WOW: And thank you for joining us! I hope everyone enjoys your book.

Review Event for Vacancy by Jann Alexander

Here's what WOW! Readers had to say about Vacancy by Jann Alexander:

"I was pulled right into Jann Alexander’s Vacancy. She knows just how to create a scene that captures each character's emotions and evokes vivid physical sensations and settings. There are multiple POVs throughout the book, but Jann knows just how to rope the reader into each perspective without taking them out of the story. Chapters are short, so the pacing is perfect. My heart went out to each character as they navigated the changes in their lives. Definitely recommend this one!" ~ Nicole P.

"This novel follow two women whose lives become intertwined and after a tragic accident they realize maybe there was a reason they were brought into each other's lives. Helen a widowed school teacher has taken an interest in a new student Jillie. She feels something isn't right at home and reaches out to her mother to try to get a little more insight. But the mother continues to ignore the meetings and calls from Helen.

"When Helen's worst fear comes true, she carries the guilt that she should have done more. Charlene, a young mother stuck in a bad relationship just found out she is pregnant again. How could this happen? He didn't even want the first child and he never takes the time for his first child, the teenage son she helps care for. She needs to get out and finds the strength to do all it takes to get out of this situation. With the help of some friends, she gets out of there with Mick and Jillie, but the struggle is hard.

"While stepping away for a few moments to make a phone call, a terrible accident happens and now the fear of her new life she was starting hangs in the balance as the town points fingers at her and labels her as another negligent mother that shouldn't have had children. With the strength of her friends and Helen who continues to reach out, Charlene has to learn to live for the new child growing within her and the guilt of what happened. I really enjoyed this read, the struggles these women had how they gave each other strength to move forward." ~ Chelsie S.

"There have been many books written about men hurting women, but have you ever read about a secret hiding place abusing the person who trusted it? How could that be? No, this is not sci fi, and yes, the main characters are hiding unspeakable secrets despite the love and trust that are shared in Jann Alexander’s Vacancy.

"Kindergarten teacher Helen is childless and widowed. She’s grieving her hidden regrets though an administrator sees right through her and advises her to see a psychologist. She stalls while she bonds with shy girl in her class and fears that the girl’s struggling single mother, Charlene, is not parenting well.

"Charlene’s hiding a secret too, while doing the best she can to keep her daughter and the teenager her ex left behind safe. She resents Helen’s judgments and interference, but she resents her former husband’s drunken violence more. When she meets a scarred veteran who offers to lend a hand, hope flourishes, until she begs for time.

"After an unexpected tragedy Helen and Charlene bond despite the harsh judgements of people who speculate about what really happened. Helen and Charlene must confront the vacancies in their hearts, creating an opening for new love.

"Author Jann Alexander is a skillful storyteller. Her characters resonate and you’ll find yourself reeling at the problems life brings to them. She has written an earlier book in the same series, Unspoken.

"If you’re drawn to women’s fiction, other people’s problems, or the Texas panhandle, this book is for you." ~ B. Lynn G.

"Vacancy is great from start to finish.

I felt for all the characters.

Helen is both a widow and kindergarten teacher.

Charlene is a single mother with a little girl, and her brother, a teenager, who both go through more than anyone should.

Vacancy is raw, gripping, and had me hooked. It’s memorable and had me thinking about it long after I finished.

It demonstrates life’s struggles very well in the characters, their backstory, and what they experience. It’s also about resilience.

Thanks to Jann Alexander and to Women on Writing. It was a pleasure to take part in the reader review event for this novel." ~ Katherine H.

"This is a touching novel of two women whose lives cross as they face the tragedies in their lives. They find strength, making it through to new life. Second chances give hope to them both. Alexander has written an emotional novel in which the women eventually find healing and strength to overcome tragedy, remorse and guilt and experience forgiveness and hope.

Potential readers should be aware that the tragedies include the death of a spouse and a child's death. Those may be trigger situations for some. There is also a threatening and dangerous past boyfriend. Those are hard experiences but the women find the strength to go on." ~ Joan N.

What Comes Next Blog Tour

I'm excited to announce that author Caitlin Forbes is joining us for a blog tour of her novel, What Comes Next. This book is perfect for readers who enjoy adult coming-of-age stories that deal with complex, emotional subjects. Join us as we celebrate the launch of her book and interview her about her writing journey. You'll also have the chance to win a copy for yourself.

Before we get to that, here's more about her book:

An empowering and heartfelt novel about the complexities of family, the power of sisterhood, and the bravery it takes to choose happiness when all seems lost.

What Comes Next by Caitlin Forbes
"My life is perfectly fine."

Alex has pretended this for years―despite an emotionally absent father, a best friend drifting away, and a floundering dog-training business. At least Alex has her sister, Meredith, a driven polar opposite. But both their lives are upended when their estranged mother dies of a genetic condition that the sisters have a fifty-fifty chance of inheriting. For Alex, a world without her mother is uncomfortable. But a world without Meredith is unthinkable.

Alex suggests a pact to which Meredith tentatively agrees: In three months they’ll get tested. Until then they go after everything they’ve ever wanted. Alex is finally stepping out of her comfort zone and opening herself up to new relationships. Or maybe reconnecting with an old one. Nathan, a boy who once broke her heart, needs a trainer for his mixed-breed rescue. Alex can’t resist.

As sparks rekindle, and time passes much too quickly, Alex discovers more about herself, her sister, and her mother than she ever imagined. And that everything in life―especially happiness―comes with a risk worth taking.

What WOW Readers Thought

"What Comes Next by Caitlin Forbes had a synopsis that hooked me. I love family-and life-oriented plots. It was immersive right from the start to the end. I liked the fact that Alex and Meredith are sisters but complete opposites. I was very sad about their mother. I felt they had already been through so much.

"The writing is captivating, raw and heartfelt. This is my first novel by Caitlin Forbes, and I would like to review more from her in the future.

"What Comes Next is an amazing, unforgettable book that I highly recommend." ~ Katherine Hayward Perez

"The book was good. I really enjoyed reading it. And it made me think about a couple of things. First, would I want to know if I had the potential to have a life-threatening genetic illness. Would I live my life differently if I knew?

"But on the other hand, what about my daughters?

"My mother passed due to breast cancer. I take after my dad's side of the family, not that it would stop me from being able to have breast cancer. I worried about them.

"Then there is Remy. Do we give up on an animal because of some trauma in their life which affects their lives? Do we give up on a person because of some trauma in their life?

"While the book may seem a bit bleak, it is actually very 'hopeful'. And who can't use 'hope' in their lives." ~ Judy Hudgins

"What if you knew that you and your sister might have inherited a debilitating disease from your deceased mother who disappeared from your life years earlier? What if she sent this news in a note to be mailed after she died? What if that made you afraid to get back into a loving relationship for fear of the hurt that might be headed your way? What if you were safest when you were training dogs that seemed incorrigible? These are only a few of the conflicts that Caitlin Forbes explores in What Comes Next a book that is well worth your time.

"With multi-faceted characters and increasing complications this is a story that will grab you. The narrator asks excellent questions of herself, and you may find yourself asking some of them about your own life. What are you afraid of? Why does commitment scare you? What are the costs of sharing a truth that cannot be changed?

"What does Alex, the narrator discover about herself, her sister, and her mother? And who turns out to be “perfectly fine” in the end? What Comes Next will answer these questions and many more." ~ B. Lynn Goodwin

"There are so many coming-of-age books with teenaged characters awkwardly teetering between childhood and adulthood. I think of What Comes Next as Coming-of-Age 2.0. It is a story of that time when you're paying your own electric bill but don't feel like a "grown-up" in the same way that your parents are "grown-ups."

"This novel is a touching journey through that time with excellent lines drawn between Alex, a struggling 20-something, and the dogs she trains. One of the things I most admired was the intimate portrayal of the different couples in the book. You could feel their love and connection through tiny clues left in the text, much more powerful than any bedroom scene.

"I think we will all recognize ourselves in the characters and struggles of What Comes Next, either something we're going through now or something from our past. this is a great book for all adults, no matter what their age. Because aren't we all wondering, What Comes Next?" ~ Jodi Webb

"I just finished What Comes Next by Caitlin Forbes, and I’m still sitting with the weight of it, because the story moves with a steady pull that kept me hooked from the first chapter to the last. The writing is direct, clear, and purposeful, which made it easy to slip into the narrator’s world and stay there without feeling pushed or nudged.

"I felt connected to the main characters almost right away, since their fear, hope, and slow steps toward change felt honest in a way that made me think about my own choices and the moments that shaped me. The pacing helped with that, because the chapters are tight and focused, yet they open up just enough space to let each moment land before the next one arrives.

"The themes stayed with me too. The book explores change, trust, and the uneasy process of letting go, and it does it with a kind of quiet clarity that made the emotional shifts feel earned rather than forced. I found myself pausing more than once to think about how people grow when the world around them refuses to stay still.

"I also appreciated how the small details gave the story depth. Tiny gestures, brief conversations, and subtle turning points all added layers that made the bigger moments feel richer and more grounded.

"If you want a story that feels human, steady, and reflective without becoming heavy, What Comes Next delivers, and I’m glad I picked it up because it stayed with me long after I closed the book." ~ Ellen Christian

What the River Keeps by Cheryl Grey Bostrom

I'm excited to announce the latest book by author Cheryl Grey Bostrom, What the River Keeps. This is a book that will enchant you with its descriptions of the Pacific Northwest while unraveling the complicated emotional lives of the characters. If you're looking for a love story steeped in nature and layered with mystery, suspense, and subtle spiritual themes of forgiveness and healing, this could be your next read. Join us as we celebrate the launch of this book with a giveaway and an interview with the author.

But before we get to that, here's more about her book:

Cheryl Grey Bostrom has a writing voice unlike anyone else. When you see the world through the eyes of her stories, you see a beauty and depth few authors can achieve. What the River Keeps is a deliberate
and thoughtful portrait of a young woman searching for truth and for herself, perfect for fans of authors
such as Erin Bartels and Leif Enger.
--Katie Powner, Christy Award–winning author of When the Road Comes Around

Hildy Nybo is a successful biologist, her study of the Pacific Northwest’s wild fish both a passion and a career. But behind her professional brilliance, Hildy’s reclusive private life reflects a childhood fraught with uncertainty. Haunted by the confusion of her early years, she now records her life in detailed diaries and clings to memory-prompting keepsakes.

Then her mother’s health fails, and Hildy accepts a job near her childhood home, joining a team of scientists who will help restore her beloved Elwha River after two century-old dams fall. There Hildy settles into a cabin on her family’s rustic resort—a place she both loves and dreads, for reasons she can’t fully explain.

When a local artist rents an adjacent cabin for her pottery studio, Hildy resists the intrusion—until intriguing Luke Rimmer arrives to help with the cabin’s renovation. Now a few years beyond a tragedy that brought him to his knees, Luke recognizes a kindred soul in Hildy. As he earns her trust, they uncover her mysterious history, and Hildy dares to wonder if she can banish her shadows—and follow her river’s course to freedom.

About the Author, Cheryl Grey Bostrom

A keen student of the natural world and the workings of the human heart, Pacific Northwest author, Cheryl Grey Bostrom captures the mystery and wonder of both in her lyrical, riveting fiction. Her novels Sugar Birds (Christy finalist, Amazon bestseller, and Book of the Year) and Leaning on Air have won more than two dozen industry honors, among which are CT’s Fiction Award of Merit and American Fiction, Reader’s Favorite, Carol, Nautilus, Best Book, Foreword Indies, and International Book Awards.

An avid birder and nature photographer, Cheryl lives in rural Washington State with her husband and three irrepressible Gordon setters.

--Interview by Jodi M. Webb

WOW: Congratulations on your latest book, What the River Keeps! This book peeks at the life of Hildy, a biologist working on the rivers of Washington state. How do you know so much about things like dismantling dams, fisheries and the life of a biologist?

Cheryl: Thanks . . . and thanks for asking!

I was practically weaned on those topics. Raised a few miles from Olympic National Park’s Elwha River, I first roamed the pristine Elwha Valley with my grandparents, who taught me to treasure its ecosystem. Too, I rowed on the Lake Aldwell reservoir and fished for the Elwha’s giant, dwindling chinooks in Port Angeles salmon derbies. Our family visited hatcheries, and we smoked, grilled and canned salmon we caught. Because a childhood friend’s dad worked in the Elwha powerhouse, that dam was on my early radar, too. When I married a veterinarian similarly intrigued by rivers and fish, my interest only grew.

Regardless, I’m not an expert, so when I decided to have the river’s re-wilding parallel Hildy’s release from mysterious generational strongholds, I looked to others for accuracy about the Elwha’s restoration. Fortunately, online materials were endless. Since the Elwha project was the largest dam removal to date anywhere, Tribal and government researchers and scientists accumulated reams of data, photos, analyses, and videos.  I also consulted several experts involved in all phases of the restoration—including a 30-year fish biologist with the Lower Elwha Klallams and a USGS research ecologist. Their insights (and manuscript checks) were golden.

WOW: Since you wrote nonfiction for many years, I suppose you’re researching and interviewing skills came in handy. Can you talk a little about your journey into fiction?

Cheryl: Ah . . .  I fell in love with writing at age five, when Mrs. Obermeyer gave me my first fat pencil at school. I still have early poems I scrawled in soft graphite on my wide-ruled tablet. I was ten when I told my grandmother I’d write a novel someday, but by my late fifties, I was still chin-deep in non-fiction writing.

Then my first grandchild Gwyn arrived, and my focus shifted. Wanting to write for her and her someday self, I dove into fiction, learning all I could about the craft. When a workshop sketch about a tree-climbing girl turned into Sugar Birds, I dedicated the book to my Gwynie.

WOW: In What the River Keeps you lightly touch on the characters’ faith and beliefs. How do you think the inclusion of faith elevates your writing?

Cheryl: Few would deny that we humans are physical, emotional, and spiritual beings—and that whether we acknowledge it or not, we all choose beliefs that direct our worldviews and guide our choices. Whether readers believe in the God of the Bible as I do or in something else entirely, when they engage the spirituality of my characters (whose beliefs vary), they enter depths of human motivation that are rich fodder for discussion and introspection.

My books grapple with real life in this beautiful, but broken world, where spirituality shapes outcomes mightily. Themes of restoration and redemption thread my plots, but I don’t hard-sell faith, nor do I offer platitudes or easy solutions to life’s trials. Even so, some won’t be interested. I get that. Not every book appeals to me, either.

WOW: As with your first two novels, Sugar Birds and Leaning on Air, this book captures the beauty of the Pacific Northwest with breathtaking language. Any tips on how writers can effectively capture the essence of a place? Your writing is so vivid it made me wish I was an artist so I could draw the places you described.

Cheryl: The only sketching I do is with words, so I love hearing that!

I guess I’d suggest that writers draw their settings not as static backdrops to story, but as characters. We could brainstorm for hours about ways to do that, but one thing’s sure: when a story’s humans engage with a dynamic setting, the synergy can be magic. As place mirrors and interacts with character motivations and themes, readers will feel that setting’s pulse.

WOW: Have you ever considered writing a book outside of the Pacific Northwest?

Cheryl: Not yet . . . I’ve hardly tapped Pacific Northwest settings I know best, and since they’re the places I love to inhabit as I write, I think I’ll stay. My next book’s set in Washington’s San Juan Islands with earthquakes and wildlife and the living, breathing Salish Sea. You couldn’t tear me away.

WOW: Until today I had never heard of the Salish Sea and now I can’t wait for your next book! Thanks for giving us a peek at your writing life.

Trespassers and Other Stories by Aine Greaney

I'm excited to announce the blog tour for Trespassers and Other Stories by Áine Greaney. This book is perfect for readers who like contemporary fiction that spans cultures (Ireland and America) and character age groups (characters ages 16 – 76). You'll especially enjoy it if you love reading women characters facing issues of identity, family disruption, and displacement.

Today, we're sharing an interview with author and giving you a chance to win a copy of the novel!

Before we interview the author, here's a bit more about the book:

From coastal Massachusetts to rural Ireland, the characters in Trespassers struggle to reconcile past and present, place and displacement, loss and hope.

A woman travels from her Massachusetts home to her native Irish village to care for her estranged and sick father. Back in her childhood home, she comes face-to-face with previously unspoken losses.

A wealthy couple travels to Cape Cod to spend their 52nd summer on the wife's ancestral estate. On their private beach above Nantucket Sound, the husband must confront the realities of their long marriage and its social-class tensions.

An Irish immigrant takes her American-born teen to a raucous Boston house party. At that party, the teenager discovers that her mother had lied about her child's birth father—a lie that will permanently divide the mother and daughter.

- Interview by Nicole Pyles

WOW: First of all, congrats on your short story collection. What inspired you to put this collection together?

Áine: Thank you. I got the idea for this collection when, during a rare bout of house cleaning, I came across some of my old short stories in print literary magazines. As I stood next to my bookshelves, it felt like I was reading a stranger’s work. Also, I noticed a recurring pattern: Across these stories, the main characters (mostly women and ranging in age from 17 to 77) all found themselves in uncomfortable or misfit places.

When I switched on my laptop to read through some stories in progress, here was that same theme of displacement. So I knew that I had to roll up my sleeves to edit and finish the stories and that this collection would be about places (Ireland and Massachusetts).

WOW: I love finding an ongoing theme in my work. It tells me so much about my writing. You have some incredible successes under your belt. What have you learned that you can share with us about how to make a short story capture a reader?

Áine: I learned the opening scenes or pages have to draw the reader in, while also subtly orienting the reader to the story’s place, era and characters.  Also, the opening scenes must present or hint at the story’s central conflict.  Through vivid language and precise word choices, we are inviting the reader to come on board and join us for this virtual and immersive reality tour through our fictional world.

Recently, I read that this is about more than a literary journey or entertainment. Neuroscience says that, as a scene unfolds on the page or screen, our brains and nervous systems can react accordingly. But these neuro-responses won’t happen unless our opening scenes are meticulously crafted—which means some wild writing but careful editing.

WOW: How interesting! I never knew that. Did you have to go back and do any extensive revisions to your stories?

Áine: Oh, gosh, yes! On that house-cleaning day, when I read those old stories, I realized just how much we change as readers and as writers. In some cases, I saw how overwritten the stories were.

Meanwhile, those unfinished stories in my laptop needed what I call “macro editing.” In one story, the opening scene became the closing scene. Another opening scene got moved to half way into the story. Once I had made these architectural changes, I reached for my red pen to do multiple rounds of micro-editing. And I mean, “multiple rounds!”

WOW: That must have been such a rewarding process. I loved reading more about you in your author Q&A on your website. How did moving to America change your writing career and direction?

Áine: I’m an almost lifelong reader, so once I settled into my first landing place in upstate New York, I scouted out the town’s local library and independent book shop. In that main street shop, I found “The Middleman and Other Stories,” a fiction collection by the late and wonderful author Bharati Mukherjee. As well as her writing style, Mukherjee’s stories about immigrants in America really, really spoke to me.

A few years later, mostly on a lark, I decided to apply for a fiction-intensive fellowship at the local state university.  As part of the application, I had to write, finish and submit a short story. I got accepted, and, on the first night there, the teacher-author said that he’d assumed from my submitted story that I was (a) male and (b) British and (c) at least 75 years old.

This was over three decades ago now, but looking back, I think that Mukherjee’s stories about the experience of straddling countries and cultures—coupled with being in a community of fiction writers in that class—gave me the courage to get and keep writing.

WOW: Ha, I can't help but laugh about what your teacher said at the time. I'm so glad you kept going with your writing. You describe yourself as being an immigrant author. How does that guide the stories you write and the readers you interact with?

Áine: Especially in the early years or decade here in America, I lived my life in a kind of liminal space between my new and native countries and cultures. Now, there are days when I see or hear nothing to remind me of my past life in Ireland. Other days, a sight or sound or an extra vivid night dream will instantly transport me back to childhood. This juxtaposition between past and present and between native and adopted countries keeps me writing.

When I read other immigrant writers, the authors’ words and stories often mirror my own dual-realities. The literature of displacement makes me feel less displaced.

WOW:
It's like you found your literary community! Drifting away from your short story collection a bit, your book Writer With a Day Job spoke to me. How do you balance your day job with writing?

Áine: I’ve written all of my books, stories and essays while working a day job—which is what inspired me to write my instructional book!  I’m a morning writer, so I get up an hour or more before I have to get ready for work. I also keep my day job and my creative work very separate—both in my mind and in daily life. Since our pandemic, I’ve been working two part-time jobs—as a communications specialist for a non-profit health organization and as a writing-workshop instructor. Both are (mostly) work from home roles, which is wonderful.  Deleting the commute time gives us back a big slice of creative time. Finally, it helps to keep what I call “a writers mission,” and to keep reminding ourselves that writing is who we are.

WOW: As someone who used to have an hour commute to and from work, and now works from home, gaining those two hours back is a life changer. That brings me to one of my favorite questions to ask writers: what does your writing space like?

Áine: For the generative work such as journaling, first drafts, or general scribbling, I use an attic room in my house where I’ve placed a small writing table. An American friend told me it’s an old vanity table, but trust me, early in the morning before work, there’s nothing beautiful or vain about what gets written there!  For my second drafts and those macro and micro edits, I print up the manuscript and walk to a local café or our local public library. Getting out of the house helps with the switcheroo from day-job to writer. It also helps me to switch from writer mode into critical reader mode.

WOW: I think that's a wonderful balance for your writing routines. Thank you so much Áine for taking the time to talk with us today. Best of luck on your tour!

Since then, she has struggled to forget him, and she hasn’t found anyone she can love as much as she loved Nick. All the best men seem to be out of reach—including Tim Aldrich, a family friend who has recently returned to New York after launching his career in California. Prisca has been drawn to Tim since they were kids, although she believes her attraction to him is as futile now as it was then.

But she still hopes to fulfill her dreams, and she also wishes she could resolve the endless conflict between her traditional father and her unconventional brother, whose childhood scars from his and Prisca’s parents’ contentious divorce are still fresh. --- Interview by Nicole Pyles

WOW: Congratulations on your novel Charmed! What inspired this book?

Lorraine: Thank you so much! There were several inspirations for Charmed, but one of its main inspirations was the influence of the past on the present. Everyone’s backgrounds, decisions, and experiences lead to who and where they currently are. Events of the past—including the very distant past—can play a positive or negative role in people’s lives today.

For example, in Charmed, the protagonist, Prisca Weld, lives in a brownstone in Brooklyn, NYC that was acquired by her family nearly a century ago, and the manner in which it was attained has been fortuitous for the Welds but unlucky for another family. The ownership of the house (among many other things) causes tension between Prisca’s brother, Asher, and their father, who see the issue in contrasting ways, and it’s an instance of how an event from long ago—whether serendipitous or unfortunate—can touch the present day.

WOW: I love that blend of past and present and how it plays a part in the present day. I love the family dynamics in this book and you did such a good job balancing everyone's issues and struggles along with their love for each other (no matter how complicated it is). How did you develop that so well?

Lorraine: Thanks again! I find it fascinating to explore the interactions of characters who exist within the same family but perceive each other and their joint experiences differently. These perceptions are often conflicting because each family member is a complex individual who is impacted by people and situations in a unique manner. Although there is an everlasting bond between parents, children, and siblings, their love can become entangled with anger, resentment, and disappointment—and the positive emotions can make the negative ones even more difficult to navigate.

While developing the relationships within the Weld family, I gradually revealed each character’s side of their shared story. Prisca’s mother, for example, might initially seem driven by selfishness and superficial ambition, but further exploration of her background and resulting motivations paint a deeper, more relatable picture.

I always strive to create nuanced characters who are imperfect but sympathetic. Although these characters often do or say the wrong thing, it’s crucial for the reader to know what influences the characters’ behavior. As Prisca says to herself during one of Don and Asher’s frequent clashes, “I wish I didn’t understand them both. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be crushed in the middle.”

WOW: What a perfect quote! I can see this is not the first publication under your belt! What made writing Charmed different from your other novels, if at all?

Lorraine: Writing Charmed was most similar to writing my first novel, Other Words for Love. Although New Money and its sequel, Independently Wealthy, also contain romance and family drama, they are more of a glitzy Cinderella story with a crime mystery.

My first novel and Charmed are very realistic stories that take place in Brooklyn; however, Charmed is set in the present day and the main character is heading into her late twenties, while Other Words for Love takes place during the 1980s and the protagonist is a teenager. I wrote each novel from the viewpoint of characters at different phases of life, living in different eras. Of course, while writing Other Words for Love, I couldn’t let myself forget that the characters didn’t have cell phones and the internet didn’t exist!

WOW: That must have been so tough! How did getting your psychology degree in college influence your writing?

Lorraine:  My knowledge of psychology always influences my writing, and it certainly did while I was crafting Charmed. And the inspiration for Other Words for Love came when I learned about a mental state called “limerence,” which is an intense feeling of love/infatuation that can turn obsessive and harmful. This concept sparked the creation of the novel’s main character, Ariadne Mitchell, who experiences limerence during her first intimate relationship.

While creating this character, I knew there had to be much more to the story than just her involvement with her boyfriend, Blake. There also had to be psychological reasons why she becomes so quickly and deeply attached to him and why she’s so devastated when their relationship falls apart. From the beginning of the novel, Ari is depressed but has been conditioned to hide her emotions. Her parents don’t recognize this, nor do they acknowledge the dysfunction within their family, and these issues—along with other negative aspects of Ari’s mental health, including her low self-esteem and high anxiety, make her vulnerable to becoming consumed by her relationship with Blake.

WOW: I really appreciate how that knowledge influenced character development and the plotline. So, what is your writing routine like?

Lorraine: I have always felt that to be a productive author, writing should be treated as a job. I have a home office, and I usually write during business hours—as well as many nights and weekends! And although I have moments of unexpected inspiration while I’m not at my desk, I don’t wait around for them. Writing a novel can be like solving a puzzle, and I keep going even when I get stuck. I can always improve a scene later on—but I can’t edit a blank page.

WOW: I think that's awesome you stick to a schedule! I am so glad you took time out of your day to chat with us. Thank you for sharing such an amazing book!
